The borough marked August 14 1945 as an outstanding date celebrating V J Day with ceremonies and community actions. Townspeople recalled the end of World War II, soldiers and sailors returning home, and local leaders praising unity and relief after years of global conflict. The event honored clergymen and a prominent businessman for their roles in the community’s wartime relief efforts.
Mrs. Albert W. Holmberg reports the Christmas Seal campaign in Naugatuck and Bencon Falla has raised a total of 1480 dollars. Tape 2 continues the report.
Naugatuck post clerk Manginoe Jodeph NL Mangal GMg 2 was honorably discharged from the US Navy Reserve on December 18. He served in the Adjutant Poetic, Muropoin, and American theatres and trained at Great Salow, Fifth Creek, and Va. A brother is Corporal William Mangink, stationed at Fort Mont, and a sister, Genevieve, Cadet Nurse at Waterbury Hospital.
A local notice states Naugatuck stores will close Monday in observance of a New Year period. The phased closure appears tied to a holiday observance and an upcoming ship launch in Rath on January 31. The destroyer will be named for Marine Private Robert Wilkan, who died in the Marianas. The launch will mark the year’s first shipyard event at Bath.
Plans for three New Year Eve celebrations in the borough mark the ushering in of 1946. The Naugatuck Lodge of Elks hosts a large party with dancing from 9 to 12 and a late dinner, about 100 couples expected, Ray Hotchkiss orchestra providing the music. Alex Bankus and Harry Parks coordinate arrangements for this annual lodge event. The Naugatuck Aerie of Eagles plans a New Year party in the Webster building with dancing and a buffet turkey supper, reservations encouraged, Bart Burke heading a large committee and anticipating large attendance.
Fire department extinguished a smoldering blaze in a bath room apartment occupied by James Maxwell at 56 Aetna Street, a six building block owned by Herman Liebrick. Chief Shapridan Jr reported Maxwell was smoking in bed and a pile formed. another resident Donald Fellows alerted the department as smoke was seen. The damage was slight.
The Nauga Tuck American Legion Post 17 campaign net rose to 4 219 with an additional 560 raised at a campaign committee meeting in Rytherian Hall chaired by Commander George B. Lewis. He outlined house to house canvassing next week and announced a new Legion headquarters telephone to aid evening contacts.
Coxswain Zing ton L Murphy, a well known local athlete and Navy veteran, has been discharged from the UW Navy. He trained at Newport R I and served aboard Baltimore and Vesuvius seeing combat in Marshall Islands, Gilbert Islands, Palau, New Guinea, Saipan, Guam, Bonin, Okinawa and Tokyo. He earned seven battle stars and met Paul Grockial and Norman LaFontaine during service.
Seaman first class Thurston Freeman Thornton son of Mr and Mrs Freeman Thornton of Homestead avenue ships from Pearl Harbor for a second overseas tour with the United States Navy Seabees after a 40 month service period. He served in New Caledonia Guadalcanal Ulithi and other Pacific postings before a 80 day home leave. A Naugatuck high school and Cheshire Academy alumnus, he worked for D Thurston's Sons before enlisting.
Frank J. Palmieri of New Haven pleaded guilty to procuring a bribe for a New Haven Draft Board officer. He received a suspended federal sentence of one year and a day and two years probation. The bribery case stemmed from assistance Palmieri provided the government. the New Haven official was acquitted.
Bridgeport reports the five Cascare children Samuel one Salvatore three Ralph four Matthew six Rose Marie nine perished in a blaze suspected to start from a Christmas tree while their parents were away. The tragedy follows other late December incidents including a New York officer's fatal gun wounds and ongoing Kentucky mine rescue efforts.
A Beacon Falls man used snow at roadside to put out a car fire in the Millville section of Naugatuck this morning at about 9:30 o clock. Unable to reach a telephone to summon firemen he acted quickly and saved the vehicle from complete loss.
Senate foreign affairs committee plans to question Secretary of State Byrnes on Moscow talks with Bevin and Molotov. They will press why the final communique omits major issues such as Iran and Palestine and seek a fuller report after Byrnes’s Washington return.
Congressman Joseph E. Talbot warned at the Hotel Elton that the United States must guard one world for twenty years to avert another global war while addressing the New Haven county Republican league. The meeting also elected John Coutts as league president, with officers including Mrs. Etta Sherry Lemuel Cervera Ruth Shores and Howard Sagenders. William Ploski led a delegation from the Neugatuck Young Republican club at the annual meeting and election.
A federal conciliator will mediate a contract dispute between the Mine, Mill & Smeller Workers' Union CIO and Risdon Mfg Co. Ovide Garceau reports Willem Truax will seek retirement of the contract stalemate after Jan 1. The CIO has petitioned the NLRB for a strike pit due to the deadlock at Nouratuck and Waterbury plants.
Dr Baker warns that diphtheria in Naugatuck threatens more cases. He cites unvaccinated children and a recent death of a one year old as proof that gatherings must be avoided until inoculations are completed. He urges rapid vaccination by family physicians and notes adults can contract the disease too.
Honor guests at tonight's semi formal dance of the St. Francis club will reopen Columbus Hall after 15 years of closure as a public assembly. Program Chairman Emnest Allen announced the list includes Rev. Paul F. Keating, Rev. Albert Taylor, and Rev. George Dunn, along with the warden and Mrs.
Nearly six inches of snow fell in the latest storm that delayed pedestrians and vehicular travel. Borough crews opened roads after Superintendent Harold Murtha ordered plow crews at 2:30 a.m. This morning roads were passable and sidewalks usable as workers headed to offices. The system shifted from heavy snow to hail and rain by mid morning, easing driving conditions.
Commander Gaston Adams of Crusader post said permission was given to a group of veterans to form a new VFW post here. Felix Nardello presented a petition signed by 45 veterans for the Montaneri Rado Post in honor of Eugene Montanari and Daniel Rado.
