Bridgeport police announced they believe they have arrested two men linked to more than a dozen hold ups of chain stores and gas stations in the district. Howard Wubbard and Robert Mills, both chauffeurs, are held for hearings on January 6 with bail set at 10,000 each. They have been in custody since arrest yesterday morning and declined to speak. Wubbard has a prior jail sentence for robbing a yacht club. Mills has a prior auto and non support history.
Paris, Dec. 29. Mary tairdwell known as Mary Hay and Richard Barthelmess, motion picture star, have been granted a divorce by Paris courts. Mary Way said the decree was officially recorded a week ago but not public. The Barthelmess household rift has been public for over a year with alleged desertion by Are Barthelmess.
Washington reports that Treasury chemists study denaturing formulas that make alcohol undrinkable while protecting consumers from poison. Bootleg industry chemists seek ways to remove denaturants from industrial alcohol to revive brands. Treasury notes nonpoisonous denaturants could hamper enforcement, urging foolproof chemistry and possible new laws.
Paris reports twenty one lives lost when the steamer Astoria foundered in a Black Sea storm off Roumania. One survivor, a Turk, killed himself after learning his wife and three children perished. Confusion surrounds two American steamers named Astoria and their ports and assignments. Chelsea shipyards confirmed the sinking tale as inconsistent with the Boston Philadelphia Liverpool freighter.
Paris reports Aristide Briand and M. Hinault predict a Franco German rapprochement will advance disarmament in 1927. Fire in Bellevue Hospital New York December 29 A blaze threatened Bellevue Hospital earlier today endangering about 1000 patients before being contained with no panic or injuries reported.
