Athens reports that France and England prepared to occupy Constantinople. A large allied fleet with transports stands at the Dardanelles ready to renew strong bombardment on Turkish forts. The aim is to push a passage to supply Russia with arms and ammunition.
Constantinople reports at least fourteen British and French warships in the allied fleet near the Dardanelles. Turkish headquarters urge calm, claim forts will resist a landing, and note French and British transports mounting troops for an invasion.
Harwich England December 29 crew of Arethusa say spies warned of British raid on Cuxhaven at Christmas. Bombs hit municipal gas works and forts, Zeppelin dropped many bombs near the cruiser. German subs harassed the British ships while fog closed over the river mouth. six of seven airmen accounted for, one missing.
London reports eight merchant ships sunk by mines since Christmas Eve in the North Sea. The Glasgow steamer Gem and the British steamship Linar are the latest losses. The Times notes marine losses and discusses mine sources and safety, suggesting that British mines have not been laid along the English coast and that drifting mines may pose ongoing risk to neutrals.

In Summit New Jersey Rev Robert C Hull of the First Baptist church resigned to become a partner of James C Mars, a pioneer aviator.
In Clinton on December 29 wild black ducks ride ice blocks as the tide lifts them, forming a straight line one after another like a toboggan train. The ducks appear solemn as they glide across the harbor water, drifting with the ice floes.
Berlin reports German gains in Nieuport and Ypres in the western theater and repulse of Russian forces in Poland as the chief features of the official war statement issued at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Washington dispatch notes Congress aims to finish all business by March 4 with supply bills first. Senate will hold open sessions on the supply bills and executive sessions on patronage, including Wilson nominations to the new federal trade commission. Detroit, Dec 29. Petitions in bankruptcy were filed yesterday by the Krit Motor Car Company and the Krit Sales Company, both of Detroit. The Motor Car Company lists liabilities of 881,238 with assets of 622,533. The Krit Sales Company shows liabilities of 234,300 and assets of 256,814. The sales company was formed to aid the motor firm about a year ago. The cited cause is lack of business due to the European war.
Buffalo reports a full inquiry into the Canadian infantrymen who shot Walter Smith and Charles Dorsch near the Niagara frontier. Washington will dispatch special officers. petitions and cables push for prompt action as coroner and inquest proceed.
John Horn, 25, jailed in Millville on murder charges after shooting through a window at Buckschutum home, killing 6 year old Beatrice Bailey. He confessed after learning the victim was his, claiming jealousy over Miss Pettit’s rejection. Horn to be arraigned today.
President Wilson today confirmed reports that the United States has sent a protest to Great Britain over the detention of American shipping on the high seas. The note, presented to the British foreign office, asserts the U S position is above reproach in international law and seeks cessation of seizure of ships and cargos. Diplomatic circles note the move as a Surprise and expect other neutrals may follow.

In Los Angeles on December 28 Georgia Buller became the first woman to preside over a department in the Los Angeles police court. She sat as judge while five cases were sentenced, with Judge T F White nearby for guidance. Only women were arraigned and all male spectators were excluded.
Washington reports a looming clash between Zapata and Villa over amnesty for Huerta followers. Gutierrez Villa faction seeks fair trials for former federal officers while Zapatistas favor summary executions. Tensions rise ahead of Mexico City national convention on January 1 to pick a provisional president.
Kass Valley California reports the death of Andrew G. Peterson aged 80, one of the last survivors of the Civil War ironclad battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. Peterson served as a confederate sailor aboard the Merrimac after entering the Confederate navy in 1862.
