Hartford reports Governor Bowles ordered agencies to return unused funds to the general fund after a budget director warned of a looming deficit. The move aims to curb spending delays on equipment and capital projects to bridge the upcoming tight fiscal months.
Patrons for the New Year’s Eve Ball sponsored by St Francis CYO were announced by Miss Judy Martines. under Rev George Dunn guidance the dance runs 8 to 12 30 with Francis DelFino orchestra. Patrons include John White and James Owens families China Martinez Raymond Dowling and Alex Sullivan with more to be announced.
Msgr Flanagan Circle Columbian Squires and St Francis CYO girls will clash in a MX question contest after a Circle meeting in Knights of Columbus rooms. Thomas Owens announces a 7 pm business meeting and 7 30 pm start. Refreshments and dancing follow until 9 30 pm with all CYO girls invited.
A 51 year old associate professor of economics at Wesleyan University died in San Juan Puerto Rico while conducting a labor study. Dr Norman J Ware a Portland resident and member of the National Railway Board since 1961 was tied to the island project and its workers conditions. Rotary club attendance featured Stephen Chaikowski a Waterbury magician at the annual meeting with Naugatuck Rotary members at the YMCA.
A New York father, mother, and their two young children died on Christmas Eve as relatives found the scene after breaking into their apartment. Police say toxic fumes from a faulty refrigerator caused the fatalities in what authorities call a tragic appliance mishap.
The Naugatuca Board of Education reports Cross Street and Western elementary schools advance "very nicely" with Complete envelopes and windows awaited. Central Avenue lags due to a steel strike delaying roof beams, while architects say all three projects should finish by late winter or early spring despite delivery bottlenecks.
Two new airmail routes will begin in New England around January 12. One route links Boston with Lawrence Manchester and Keene Albany and Boston. The second serves Albany Adams North Adams Greenfield Orange Fitchburg and Boston. Later, Bennington Vermont will be added to the first route and Lowell Massachusetts to the second.

Officials praised the high school driver training course noting one thousand one hundred seventy five students with no accidents or arrests.
A 19 year old New Haven youth attempted to rescue a trapped man from a burning home. Douglas Murray was overcome by smoke and hospitalized. Lawrence Digiols, trapped on the second story, was rescued by arriving firefighters and taken down a ladder. Digiols suffered burns and smoke inhalation and is listed in fair condition at New Haven Hospital.
Rainfall passes inch mark as two day period ends with relief to well owners from the Naugawhex Water Co. Temperatures stayed near the upper forties, though highs were not as extreme as earlier in the month. Readings showed a high of 57 and a low of 38 as the region remains unusually mild with claims of discomfort to farmers noting the winter has just begun with more months ahead.

Bridgeport police say death of 23 year old Navy veteran John P. Cotter may not be murder. Police superintendent says no evidence of assault or robbery. A man, Samuel T. Washington, is held as someone possibly unintentionally responsible after claiming Cotter fell while walking with him. Investigators note Washington said Cotter fell and he tried to hoist him up. Three other men are held as material witnesses who reportedly saw Cotter fall.

The treasurer of the International Liver company, Herbert J. Reeves, says he will retire soon. Reeves joined the firm in 3910 63 and has served as treasurer for ten years.
United Press reports a red convertible brought Israel Jacobson back to Vienna after 13 days in Hungarian custody on spying suspicions. He says the arrest was mistaken identity and Hungary released him at the Austrian border amid protests from Vienna. Robert Vogeler remains held in Hungary as authorities question Americans abroad. In Connecticut, Deputy Coroner William J. Martin finds no criminal negligence in Charles DeCavse’s fatal Maugatuck Beacon Falls crash on August 28 where DeCavse’s car hit a rock ledge and flipped.
