Massive blizzard snarls driveways and highways with 200 cars stalled bumper to bumper along the Merritt Parkway. Five deaths are reported across the state as heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions strand travelers from Greenwich to Stamford and beyond.
Fire Chief John J. Sheridan and fra department workers battled heavy snow to clear paths for emergency and fire trucks. Snowdrifts closed streets along Maple, North Water, and nearby avenues as residents and motorists faced blocked drives and stranded cars. Rescue teams aided dozens along the Marylt Parkway with state police assisting in efforts while stores rushed bread and milk to restock shelves.
A historic 18 hour blizzard slammed the borough, 25 inches of snow piling drifts up to six feet. Transportation ground to a halt as rail and bus service struggled. schools and workplaces closed while crews cleared streets and plows worked through the night.
Road report shows snow affecting multiple counties with chains required on main routes. All main roads open but traffic slow in Southeastern and Northwestern regions. A local event at Boneh Valley Grange was canceled due to star conditions.
New York reeled under a record 26 inch snowfall with air and rail service disrupted. More than 10,000 workers and 9,000 firemen plus 12,000 police were ordered to 24 hour duty as the disaster board studies fuel shortages.
