Home After Completing 33 Missions by Naugatuck Airman
Technical Sergeant Wallace T. Saxton of 220 May Street, Naugatuck, has returned from England after completing 33 combat missions over continental Europe. He flew 16 missions in a B-24 and 17 in a Liberator and Flying Fortress, including over Berlin and near St Lo, Cologne and Sadrbrocken. Saxton said missions often ended with damaged planes but crews returned, and noted fighter escorts kept Luftwaffe away. He arrived in Naugatuck on Christmas Eve and visited his wife, Violet Linke, while en route to Atlantic City distribution center from Devens Massachusetts. He recalled the invasion era bombing actions and his unit, Sun Air Force, including local men Stanley Widuch, Cap Furs, and Frank Wylong.
