In Trenton on December 27 the court of pardons approved paroles for 92 prisoners amid fines for eight cases and resumption of sentences. The Rev George Huggins serving five to thirty years for assault on a girl had his case deferred but will be heard in due order. The court largely ratified terms of prisoners nearing release.
Post office inspectors opened a rigid inquiry into the robbery of 700 dollars from seven registered packages at the local post office. All ten local officers were grilled, but inspectors failed to find a clue, and the robbers remain at large.
Chicago December 27 April 1 set as probable date for the new currency system inauguration. The organization committee will hold hearings January 1 to March 31 to designate federal reserve cities and districts. Banks will file acceptances with the treasury and President Wilson will name the federal reserve board to begin work.
In Los Angeles on December 27 the bandit John Bostick confessed to Sheriff Hammill details of his crime aboard the Sunset Limited near El Monte on December 1. Faithful work in her profession earned Miss Fannie BH Avery a husband on Christmas day when she wed Stephen Hall proprietor of Valley Mill. The ceremony took place at Riverview in Portland with Rev M S Stocking officiating. Both are residents of Portland.
City Marshal Mack calls for public whipping post for wife beaters as he cites a court case against Richard W. Daley. Daley's wife was blamed by neighbors. Mack offers to wield the whip if law is enacted.
A large Goshen farmhouse owned by Samuel Cos of West Goshen burned early yesterday. Occupied by Mr. Coe and his 10-year-old son Marshall, they escaped unharmed. The residence lay about ten miles northwest of Goshen center.
Joe Tinker former manager of Cincinnati and Gilmore of the Federal league met in Chicago to discuss joining the new league. Talks yielded no deal but continued negotiations likely today or Monday. Tinker hinted at a potential $36,000 three year offer, stock options, and the chance to outperform in money terms versus the National league.
Fifty Japanese military officers have requested permission through the Mexican special embassy in Tokio to enlist in the Mexican army, a War Office report states. Separately, a five hour clash on Capolin Mountain near Ajusco left 45 rebels dead, with the rest dispersed, according to the Federal commander.

Two new diphtheria cases reported in Windsor Locks raise local total. Marion Egan, six year old daughter of Edwin P. Egan on Spring Street, and a six year old child in the Thomas Conroy family on Grove Street were placed under strict quarantine by Dr. J A Coogan.
Herbert C. Branch vows to aid sister Adelaide M. Branch, a voluntary prisoner in the county jail, blaming dead lawyer M. H. Couch for her downfall. Walter Mullen a Port Washington boy aged 15 was taken to Nassau hospital Mineola after a gun discharged while he and companions were on a fence. Doctors found no fatal wound but severe bleeding and superficial skin injury. he returned home with parents.
Los Angeles police dispersed a meeting of about 1,000 unemployed men at the Playa resulting in one death and numerous arrests. Public Welfare Committee plans to file peace disturbance charges against 32 of 75 arrestees while Jesus Sovia faces possible assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing Police Lieutenant Kriege.
A downtown fire in St. Louis discovered early today ravaged the business district bounded by Broadway Locust Charles and Sixth streets. The five story Paris Shoe company building collapsed endangering many firemen as crews fought the blaze and the loss reached about 100000.
A Christmas week storm battered five states with wind rain hail and snow causing 18 deaths and extensive property damage. In New Jersey waves and bulkheads broke, towns suffered, and Long Branch reported 123 mph winds. In Calumet Michigan copper miners faced a strike crisis as Charles H. Moyer left town under escort amid relief disputes and a fire scare investigation.
Middletown reports Professor Willard G. Fisher, twice Democratic mayor and repeated candidate, defeated in a tight caucus by 18 votes. Dr James A. Lawton won the nomination, Lawton 165 to Fisher 147. City election set for January 19. Mayor John L. Fisk is Democrat, council remains Republican. GOP caucus forthcoming.
In Brooklyn, Vincenzo Lauro, 35, died after doctors at Holy Family hospital sewed his heart and lung following a deep stab wound at Van Brunt and Degraw. He had initially seemed to recover after the Christmas night operation but relapsed yesterday. Assailants remain at large.
Mass meeting of Local 10 of the Industrial Workers of the World representing the Amalgamated Union of Motel Restaurant and Club Workers will be held at Bryant hall on Forty second Street and Sixth Avenue to plan higher wages for New Year's Eve. Reported demands include extra cooks at 10 dollars and waiters at 3.56 dollars above the usual maximum of 5 dollars. Speakers include W. D. Haywood making his first U.S. appearance since returning from Europe, with Carlos Tresca Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and A. Giovannitti listed as participants.
Mendel Beilis and his wife have been granted passports by the Kieff prefecture and will depart Russia for London after a brief stay in Paris. He remains undecided about making the United States his future home.
