The United States Navy ordered two battleships to Vera Cruz Mexico to replace the Michigan and New Jersey. Minnesota and Georgia will sail January 2 from Philadelphia and Boston respectively, after quarantine at Delaware Breakwater for smallpox precautions and will head to Veracruz. The Michigan and New Jersey will return to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for overhaul.
Vienna dispatch reports former Turkish ambassador to France Munir Icha and his son Djemil Bey, a Turkish army officer, arrested in Constantinople. They are charged with aiding interests deemed hostile to the Turkish government.
Newport R I December 24 The fish steamer Winifred left in tow of the tug Al for de.y dock New York after entering Newport badly damaged with a leak and a grenade shaft. The vessel carried a cargo of oil from Port ArTexas and arrived in Newport in a disabled state.
New York opening shows fractional changes as undertone remains steady. United States Steel edged up then slipped. Amalgamated Copper and American Can rose modestly. Reading gained on hopes of a government settlement. declines included Norfolk & Western and Pennsylvania Railroad. Transactions light with many traders away for Christmas. no session tomorrow.
In Cuxhaven Germany on December 24 a forty eight hour gale wrecked the North Sea. The storm claimed at least 52 fishermen with over 40 bodies washing ashore. Rescue tugs recovered more victims as coast guards increase vigilance for distressed steamers.
In St. Louis last night Jack Shelton, once a shoemaker, was knocked out in the sixth round by Leo Kelly after a careless exchange early in the frame. Kelly landed a solid right to Shelton's jaw, sending him down for a ten count, ending a bout Shelton otherwise fought well in.
Chicago report says the Federal league is pressing to sign Joe Tinker, ex-Cub and Reds manager, offering $45,000 per year for three years. Washington Dec 24 The Owen Glass currency measure enacted by Congress and signed by President Wilson begins to take effect. An organization committee will designate regional reserve bank cities and set reserve district limits. Hearings will be held by the committee with the treasury comptroller and agriculture secretary. John Skelton Williams is the leading candidate for comptroller at a $12000 salary. Several cities are seen as likely reserve banks, with more than 600 national banks ready to join. The system requires subscribing 6 percent of capital and surplus to regional banks and stock payments within 96 days.
Governor Glynn in Albany on December 24 said he would not issue a further statement about Whitman’s proposed appointment as special deputy attorney general. He noted the season of peace and that more remarks might come if Whitman says anything further that requires response. A morning statement had been prepared and reviewed by the attorney general’s staff.
Madison Wis Dec 24 The University of Wisconsin Dramatic Society will dramatize The Book of Job likely the first modern stage production of the work. H M Kallen asserts the play is a restoration of the original Hebrew form not a new dramatization. Many literary authorities regard Job as an epic, not a drama, claiming there is no Hebrew drama in their literature.
Alienists testifying at Hans Schmidt's murder trial of Anna Aumuller described him as a paranoiac. Dr. William A. White from the U S Hospital for the Insane testified that Schmidt's insanity was of the paranoiac type and that he viewed the act as a commanded glorious sacrifice. Examination to continue when the trial resumes.
Jacob B. Estrup known as the Bismarck of Denmark died in Copenhagen at age 88. He formerly served as premier and his diplomacy prevented Denmark’s absorption by Germany.
The steamer Providence carrying eight hundred passengers home for Christmas from New York did not arrive in Newport, Rhode Island, until 9 30 this forenoon due to high southeast winds. Passengers departed by special train for Boston immediately. The boat was due here at 2 a m.
In Stamford on December 24 Giuseppe Matura and Giuseppe Gaudio were killed when their feet touched a live wire on a Jefferson Street sidewalk during a rainstorm. The wire, likely broken by high winds, lay across the path where the pair walked under one umbrella. Both unmarried and residents of 200 Pacific Street were found badly burned.
New York Christmas baskets will be provided to Bowery families and lodging house residents as in prior years. The Timothy D Sullivan association has been reorganized and incorporated to continue the benevolent work.

Miss Eleanor Wilson youngest daughter of the president played Santa Claus delivering toys and candy to about 15 families in a Virginia settlement near the Potomac. She said the president was ill and was heading to Mississippi for a vacation while sending his love and best wishes.
Arthur Smith will play Santa as the Elks Club entertains 1,100 or more children at Crown Street lodge rooms today at 2 PM with a big tree, sleds, books, candy, and an orange for each child. Governor's Foot Guard band and acts from Grand Opera House will perform. The club also prepared 125 Christmas baskets and 25 tons of coal for the needy.
