The Porter Inn on the Naugatuck turnpike near Route 8 is a historic 18th century house built by David Porter and son around 1752. In July 1779 militia and villagers mobilized here as 1500 British troops moved on New Haven, with messengers like Ethel and Polly Porter warning locals and guiding evacuations while the inn sheltered soldiers and families through a tense night.

Baldrige Named New Chairman at Scovill Co.
WATERBURY Malcolm Baldrige will become chairman and chief executive officer of Scovill Mfg Co with John C. Helies as president. The changes take effect December 31 as top management is reorganized after rapid growth. Baldrige has led Scovill since 1963 after 15 years at Eastern Co. Helies, former GE Appliance Control head, joined Scovill in 1964 and became executive vice president in 1966. Scovill reports doubled sales and tripled earnings in recent years.
