Defenders of Luzon and Hong Kong are putting up a hard fight against strong attacks by the Japs. Doorway prize awarded to Mrs. George Cronin of Rockwell Avenue as first prize in the Doorway Decoration Competition by the Garden Department of the Nantagiel Women’s Club. Second prize to Mrs. M. H. Long. third to Mrs. George Painter. In door decoration divisions other prizes awarded to Mrs. Paul Johnson, Miss Helen Whitlock, and Mrs. L. W. Corliss. Third division prizes went to Mrs. H. J. Gorton, Mrs. John Wrinn, and Mrs. Norman Carlson. Judges were Mrs. John Coe Jr, Miss Edith Sellew, and Miss Mildred B. Harmon. Judging began 4:30 o’clock. luncheon followed at Mrs. Cronin’s home.
Lawrence Koenig of Buffalo was exonerated by the Waterbury court clerk after being charged in the death of Ernest M. Smith of Union City. Smith, 80, was struck by Koenig’s freight trailer on the Waterbury Union City road on November 5. Evidence indicated Smith crossed the highway and was struck as he tried to avoid another car. he died instantly.
Washington reports current fiscal year expenses and receipts through December 20 compared with last year. Total expenditures reach about 10.718 trillion with defense at 7.504 trillion and receipts near 1.025 trillion, yielding a net deficit around 9.51 trillion.
Marlford Conn December 2. State Employment Service Director Maj Leonard J Maloney said nearly a score of electricians and airplane mechanics in Gannne tivul have responded to a government appeal for men to work at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The workers would be interviewed by representatives of the WA 8 Civil Service Commission to determine their qualifications.

The Board of Warden and Burgesses meeting to vote on installing parking meters was postponed again due to a quorum shortage. Warden Leo J. Frawdy said gathering the full board will be hard this week because of holidays, but plans to assemble early next week. Action must occur before January 1 to ensure delivery and installation.

The Navy department announced today that Japanese forces had effected a landing on Wake Island this morning. The communique cited a favorable situation in the region based on radio reports and military displacements from distant stations.
