Naugatuck faces a somber Christmas as nearly 2,000 residents serve in the armed forces and WWII toll weighs heavy. Merchants report strong holiday buying but stress prayers and subdued celebrations. Schools close for the holiday recess as the town observes the season under wartime strain.
Private Gallucci is taking a seven day course at Keesler Field as part of the Air Corps basic airframe and engine mechanics training. The program includes maintenance theory, electrical systems, instruments, hydraulics, propellers, engines, and related inspection topics aimed at preparing him for specialized aircraft maintenance work.
Several factories will close for the Christmas holiday. Lewin Engineering will shut all day and end Saturday operations. Riscon Manufacturing plans Saturday noon closure through Tuesday with inventory work excluded. Nhugacel Manufacturing and Bristol plants will close at noon Saturday, resume after the holiday, and other sites follow a similar schedule.
President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill are in Chicago for talks. Roosevelt says Atlantic Charter partnerships are as strong today as in 1941. The weather section notes a severe cold wave from Low to Atlantic coast with Detroit seeing subzero readings and there are labor-store strike actions at Montgomery Ward & Co demanding action per War Labor Board directives.
Mrs Lillian Biggin a Bradley Street resident faded this morning at her home. Born September 15 1872 in Pomporaug she was the daughter of the late George and Eliza Gye. She came to Naugatuck as a girl and joined Congregational church and many societies. Survived by one daughter Mrs Genese Rover of Janson Massachusetts and two granddaughters Beverly Tagers Monson and Jane Biggin Seymour. Funeral Saturday at 2 pm in Naugatuck Congregational Church Rev Edward T Hance officiating burial Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at Anderson Funeral Home 20 Meadow Street Naugatuck tonight 7 to 9.
Joseph Binneny of 90 Chigch Street has served 27 months in the Southwest Pacific with an Army unit and is expected home soon. His wife, Mrs John Pinneny of Gorman Street, said a telegraph advised arrival tonight or tomorrow. He recently came from the Pacific to the West Coast and will report to Fort Devens before a two week furlough.
Police said no new details emerged in the investigation of a Wednesday night break into Felix's shoeshine car on South Main Street. About $300 was stolen, kept in a drawer on a chair stand, allegedly pried open with two screwdrivers by someone who appeared to know the layout. No other items were taken.
Albert Pliskin of Actua Street, a respected local businessman, has sent a holiday prayer to President Roosevelt. He urges divine aid in the current conflict for armaments and a world guided by peace, noting his prominence in state Jewish circles and his literary contributions. The prayer asks God to grant victory to those who contend with faith and righteousness.
William Conroy of Hartford aged 52 former Naugatuck resident died after an extended illness. He was buried this morning in Ansoma. He was nephew of Mrs. Samuel Harper and lived with his aunt during childhood. He attended Naugatuck schools before moving to Hartford where he resided.
A chimney fire at the Rogouskas home on Apeh Street was tackled by firemen after an hour long effort. Chief Joan J Sheridan cited stubborn flames and inaccessible points. Fireman Thomas Lawlor injured a finger during ladder removal. injury not serious per Dr Edwin Curran.
A youth coaster on Scott street nearly died after speeding toward Cherry street. His sled was smashed when an auto turning into Scott street struck. the driver was not at fault and the child survived with no injuries. Scott street is a dangerous sliding area in Naugatuck.
The Naugatuck Methodist church program at the church school this Sunday December 24 will feature nearly fifty boys and girls. Corrine R. Hennick daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hennick of Waterbury received a bachelor of arts at Syracuse University commencement exercises. She placed first in the College of Liberal Arts and ranked fourth overall in the class. She is among three in the Class of 45 elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Her degree was magna cum laude. Her father, Mr. Hennick, is publisher of THE NEWS.
Private First Class Mahlon R. Sears Jr of Naugatuck Conn was cited by the 11th Armored Infantry Battalion First Armored Division and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for combat with Fifth Army under General Mark W Clark in Italy. The badge features a silver rifle on infantry blue within a silver wreath as a mark of proven fighting ability. Sears was reported in action previously but rejoined his unit before his parents received the notification.
United Press reports that First Army fronts show early signs of a possible turn against the Nazis as Eisenhower urges unity and resolve. Despite halted Belgian advances, German momentum toward Luxembourg remains unclear amid weather and enemy claims.
The street department checked windows on parking meters today and replaced broken panes with glass crystals after celluloid was destroyed by matches. Patrolman Harris Burke noted the glass gives a better appearance and encourages use, with a jammed unit revealing a bent penny at about 110 degrees. some viewed the repairs as indicating meters will stay as they are.
The Our Ladies Sodality of St Francis church will receive Holy Communion in a body at 9 oclock Mass Sunday for the spiritual and temporal welfare of parish members in the armed forces. Rita Burns presides as about 425 girls participate with center aisle seating and expected full church.
Lieutenant Fat Obst 30 a Naugatuck native was killed in action in France on December 6 his wife Ruth of Worcester Mass received official War Department notice His brother Louis learned of the death Obst had been in the Army two years and went overseas last September He was a Naragatutuck high school and North Carolina State College 1936 graduate He moved to Worcester four years ago He leaves twin daughters Mary and Polly two years old next month his parents Mr and Mrs John Obst of Naugatuck two brothers Louis and Walter both of Naugatuck three sisters Mrs Pred Barlow Newport R I Mrs Robert Johnes Naugatuck and Mrs Errel Eckford Baltimore Md
Joseph E. Reilly son of Mr and Mrs Burone Reilly of Highland circle will be honored at a memorial Mass at St Francis church Saturday at 7 30 p m requested by American Legion post 17. He was lost in action in Europe in November and is the first Naugatuck Legionnaire son to be killed in the present war. He belonged to the Sons of the Legion affiliate of the Naugatuck post.
A two alarm fire in Somerville Massachusetts caused about 20000 dollars in damage to a chain department store on Broadway. The blaze also damaged a market and hardware store in the same one story brick building. No injuries were reported and trolley car and auto traffic were halted for nearly two hours. The Metro Muse Mart at 58 Church features musical instruments and related supplies.
Commander Gaston Adams announces the Veterans of Foreign Wars post meeting on Rubber Avenue tonight will be very important. All members are urged to attend as communications from state and national headquarters require a decision. Matters on local plans of the past will also be discussed and members should be present to voice opinions.
At the Columbia Rebekah lodge 35 IOOF meeting Mrs. Marion Jennings was chosen noble grand for the coming year. A Christmas party followed with gifts from Santa Claus and carols led by Ruth Barratt. Refreshments were served with decorations matching the season.
