Philadelphia officials report eighteen dead and six missing after a catastrophic blaze at a leather goods plant. Fire walls collapsed trapping workers while rescuers labored for hours, with at least two dozen injured and multiple bodies recovered from the ruins.

Dover, England, December 22. Pilot Grace in a Short Wright biplane began a crossing attempt to beat the 178 mile cross Channel record. He faced cold weather and fog as he headed toward the French coast with hopes of landing near Paris, amid anxious English watchers.

Three petitions from New Haven Democrats urged Frank W. Foley to be state highway commissioner. One petition carried the entire delegation that nominated Simeon H. Baldwin for governor. Baldwin said he would consider the request but warned no appointment would be made soon.
Interstate Commerce Commission report shows railways earned 940,076,363.61 in profits for the year ended June 30 1910, nearly 142 million above the prior year and over three times US government revenue. Indictments for violations of the commerce act total 44 as rate cases loom. A strike by Adams Express employees fails to materialize in Hartford and New Haven with workers returning to duty.
Bristol December 22. Notice served on Representative elect Charles H. Calor that Merritt Ryder, the Democratic opponent, would contest his election after ballot count showed Ryder defeated by two votes on election day.
In Springfield Massachusetts the Adams Express strike failed as union members who had joined the union were discharged before the 6 a.m. strike time, leaving no employees to walk out. Boston reporters say drivers and helpers connected with Adams Express awaited Springfield's word on the strike but expressed no readiness to be called out, pending actions by President Thayer.
Newark New Jersey authorities report a grand jury finding that New Jersey laws, not owners or inspectors, caused the factory fire deaths of twenty five girls. The jury cites fire traps in Newark and says drastic reform is needed while owners are shielded from common law liability after complying with statutes.
Axel Berglund of New Britain testified he was hired as Dr. Daniel Brooks' valet, given $100, and taken to New York by Brooks and another man before being left there. He followed Albert Massey in sharing similar experiences and urged reading Brooks' operations in newspapers before reporting. Police will probe all valet ads. more victims may arise.
Ansonia December 22 Louis A Lev in purchased the Hub Clothing store on Main Street at auction and opened the shop today. The plan is to clear the current stock then remodel and replace with a completely new line of dry goods and other merchandise to modernize the store.
New York dispatch reports a rear end collision between a freight and a passenger train on the New York Trenton branch near Midstone Junction New Jersey at 9 30 this morning. Fireman J Knox of Wilmington Delaware and Brakeman J P Minenan of Trenton New Jersey were instantly killed. Ten passengers were slightly injured and service was tied up in both directions until nine o clock.

More than 200 extra clerks enlisted to sort 12 000 sacks as Postmaster Morgan notes records in New York. Over seven million dollars in foreign money orders issued for Europe.
The will of Thomas Dudley Wells admitted to probate by Judge Marvin. West Hartford executor is Howard B. Pirkin with Everett C. Wilson and Charles N. Starkweather as appraisers. Executed August 9 1910 at Hartford hospital. Bequests include ten thousand dollars to Emma Winchester and all books, with rest of estate divided between sister Mary Wells and loved ones.
John I Merwin files with the state secretary to contest the Vermont House seat at the next session. He alleges miscounting of about fifty ballots that bore cross marks against the Republican and Democrat tickets altered final tallies, potentially giving him a plurality over all candidates.
Eastern and central Washington will see irrigation projects covering over 1,000,000 acres with private capital totaling about 55 million dollars. The Quintr valley project near Spokane will irrigate 500,000 acres, costing about 25 million, while Horse Heaven and Klickitat plans add 12 million and more. Spokane also plans a five million dollar municipal power plant on the Pend Oreille river to generate up to 6,000 horsepower for pumping and manufacturing.

London reports the Cunard steamer Mauretania finishing a record Atlantic voyage and due into Fishguard tonight. If she arrives by 10, trains will run to Dover and London. A round trip to New York could total eleven days, fourteen hours, and seventeen minutes.
