Naugatuck police and street crews battled a heavy snowstorm that dumped about 16 inches, delaying commerce and trapping residents indoors. Cleanup continued through the morning as roads remained treacherous and public services worked to reopen streets and clear driveways.
The Glenridge contest to be held Thursday afternoon December 27 names judges C Fridair Carlson Burgess James Lyons and Joseph F. Smith of THE NEWS. They will evaluate exterior house decorations as night lighting helps contrast with surrounding displays and boost holiday spirit in the district.
Bronze Star Medal holder Cheptuna 31 Inboell, son of Mr and Mrs Cheater PoTabet, was discharged at Camp Swift Texas after nine months service in the European theater. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and Rhine crossing, with postings in France Luxembourg and Germany. He entered service after graduating from Naugatuet High School and plans to return to Cuba after Christmas. His brother Souman ge C Inball of the Navy is on ten day leave aboard USS William R Rush docked in Boston.
Thomas P. Leary, prominent local resident, is promoted to head the Metropolitan Life offices in Neary Building. A 10 year veteran of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., he started as an agent in the Naugatuck district and later served as assistant manager in Waterbury. He is a graduate of Naugatucks and attended Miami University Oxford Ohio. He is married to Evelyn Cockgroft, with four children at 2 Francis Street. State Senator William A Painter will be heard on WBRY in Witterbury Friday after noon at 1 40 on the Our Neighbor program hosted by Fay Clark. The Meet Your Legislator campaign sponsors the appearance as an informal discussion of legislative matters and procedures for the benefit of the general public.
The local Vet Center on Church Street will close for a 10 day holiday vacation the first since its 16 month opening. Office administrator Mrs. Ford Wulfeck said it will shut at 4 30 Friday afternoon December 21 and reopen Thursday January 3. For emergencies veterans or families should contact the local American Red Cross or the Waterbury VA office at 195 Grove Street. On June 2 at 10:30 Mrs. Wulfeck will be interviewed on the Woman's Basis radio program on Station WIC about the Connecticut Advisory Committee on Women Veterans which she chairs. The committee, under the state Department of Education youth services, will hold its first regular meeting that morning at 16 o'clock in Hartford.
Hartford December 20 UP The inauguration of Trinity College new president George Keith Funston will be held February 22. Funston was elected president in June 24 but soon took leave to join the Navy.
A Navy Seaman 8c James B. Ahern, aboard USS Sibley in the Pacific, sent five dollars to Nav yatuck American Legion Post No. 1 for the $20,000 Ananda campaign to buy a Legion home from the McCarthy Estate on Cedar Street. Ahern, son of Edward J. and Mrs. Ahern of 226 North Main, is a Nangatuck High School graduate who has served about two years in the U. S. Navy. He wrote that his dad urged him to join the Legion and that the membership card boosted his morale on West Coast trips, noting his father’s pride in fraternal memberships but belief a Legion membership must be earned.
A total of 5348.99 dollars in old age and survivors insurance payments are distributed monthly to 254 residents of Naugatuck. The Waterbury Social Security Office processes claims, with 120 retired workers, 35 wives, 56 children, 16 widows, and 27 young widows with children receiving benefits. The office hours are 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with holiday closings noted and alternative Saturday openings on December 25 and June 5.

The Naugatuck Chemical Division of U S Rubber held its annual office party at Hop Brook Country Club on December 16 with a record 110 attendees. Santa distributed gifts, door prizes were awarded, and carols were sung as Jim Corti and his band played into the evening.
All public and parochial schools in the borough will close for the annual holiday recess. Public elementary schools dismiss at 2 30 pm tomorrow, Naugatuck High at 12 48 pm, with all schools vacationing until Monday Jan 2. St Hedwig’s will end tomorrow and vacation until Jan 2. St Francis uncertain but likely to close until Jan 2.
Secretary Herbert F E Brown of the Mangatucka YMCA announced the annual Boys Christmas party was postponed from last night due to a severe storm. The event will be held Wednesday December 26 and is expected to draw several hundred boys with an amplified program described as among the most complete of its kind.
Postmaster Frank T. Green stated yesterday was the peak Christmas mailing day with slightly over 78 000 letters and cards cancelled locally. Parcel post was down from the prior days yet about 2000 parcels were handled by an enlarged force as mail volume surpassed the previous days by thousands. Deliveries ran efficiently despite a blizzard though rural routes faced drift delays. Residents are urged to clear sidewalks and mail box approaches to aid postmen.
An unconfirmed Tokyo radio report claims Russia will not participate in Japan’s occupation, citing a dispute with General MacArthur over island allocations. The Naugatuck Rotary Club held its weekly dinner meeting at the MCA dining room at 12 35 yesterday afternoon with President Swanton Glaver presiding over the regular business meeting. Harold Chittenden reported on Rotary service efforts to give borough men drafted into the armed forces a proper sendoff and urged continued policy of farewell. Lt Colonel Gary Andersen was introduced as the Rotary’s guest speaker by Arthur W. Swan and was to speak on the invasion of Normandy but the snowy cold conditions prevented it.

Public and parochial schools in the borough suspended sessions due to yesterday's blizzard. The 7:30 AM no-session signal notified students at public schools including Naugatuck High and St Hedwig's and St Francis' parochial schools that morning and afternoon classes would not be held. Some could not hear the alert, but no explanation was given. Schools resume tomorrow, with public pupils back Jan 7 and parochial pupils Jan 2.
Evening classes due to power and radio issues were postponed and will resume on January 7. The notice is from Jeff D Restalrast of 22 Church Street, Blwaxse, listing a telephone and address details in a garbled transfer of the original text.
About 300 workers at Risdon Manufacturing NAUGATUCK and WATERBURY plants filed petitions with the IOI for government supervised strike ballots. Union rep Ovide Gareeau said delays in contract talks since CIO gained bargaining rights last year spurred the move. He noted Waterbury workers want bargaining terms tied to a Waterbury contract before a Naugatuck agreement is signed.
