Catastrophic acetylene blast rocks New York Milk Depot
A massive explosion at 8 15 this morning at the Milk Depot and Carpenter Shop of New York Central Railway on Lexington Avenue near Forty ninth Street destroyed the milk depot and adjoining buildings. A street car was hurled from tracks, two in the car and one in a passing car killed, many injured. Officials suspect ignition of a tank of acetylene gas in a milk car triggered by a spark from a rail. The blast damaged St Patrick's cathedral area, schools, and hundreds of buildings within a dozen blocks. 25 000 onlookers crowded the scene as ambulances ferried the wounded to nearby hospitals. Several injured may die no fatalities have been confirmed beyond the car occupants.
