Barney Van Ness the Last Blacksmith of Naugatuck
Barney Van Ness, longtime Naugatuck blacksmith and wagon maker, ran the town’s famed red shop at 65 Rubber Avenue for 35 years. Born in Rotterdam, he apprenticed in Middletown, came to the U.S. in the 1800s, and shod as many as eighty-five horses daily during the horse and buggy era. The Bucksmith Shop closed after the 1972 site sale for an A and P market, ending a town landmark and tradition in the borough.
