Washington reports Austria replies to the U S protest on the Ancona sinking. The Austrian note admits unsatisfactory aspects and asks for detailed U S explanations and testimony, promising a sharper response and reiterating demands in line with German policy in the Lusitania case. Officials expect another note soon.
Vienna reports Austria answered Washington on the sinking of the Italian liner Ancona. The reply criticizes American reasoning against the submarine commander, but expresses sympathy for victims and suggests the case differs from others cited by the U S. It questions the legal grounds and notes vagueness in parts of the U S note.
Ottoman war office reports British positions at Kut el Amara captured by storm. A British monitor was sunk in the Tigris by Turkish artillery. Fronts at Trans-Caucasus and Dardanelles show minor activity with artillery duels and aerial fighting.
