German ships shelled Hartlepool Scarborough and Whitby on the North sea coast today. British flotillas pursued and a naval engagement followed as authorities reported strikes on Scarborough and Hartlepool and panic among residents.
Berlin reports Russia has lost 150000 men in Poland including 80000 prisoners moved to Germany. Official review cites 475000 unwounded Russian prisoners and notes German progress behind the Burza river near Lowicz. Western Galicia offensives push Russians north. Belgian army weakened by typhoid dysentery and cholera. Lodz area sees heavy casualties but Lodz town largely undamaged.
From Athens dispatch comes news of massacres of Greek Christians at Aivaldi on the Gulf of Adramyt in Asia Minor. Turks pillaged suburbs and set fires in the town. Women and girls were violated. Aivaldi, a 20 000 population Greek town on the gulf.
The war office states that at 1:45 pm the West Hartlepool fortress was engaged by German warships from 8 to 9 am. The enemy was driven off. A small German vessel fired on Scarborough and Whitby, Whitby lying 18 miles north of Scarborough.
The Hartlepool attack began at 8 a.m. British warships have arrived and others are en route. The gas works are set on fire.
Refugees arriving in Hull report ongoing German shelling in Scarborough with heavy damage. Witness describes over 50 shells fired, fires in the city, and crowds at the railway station. An engine driver remained at his post to rescue passengers, telegraphing his wife that he was safe.
Durham reports influx of Hartlepool residents fleeing bombardment. Witness describes heavy sea fire near harbor, shells hitting central city, fires in quarters near potteries and shipyards. Panicked townsfolk rushed toward stations and countryside paths westward.
A German vessel steamed slowly past the town as firing began and later moved away to the south after heavy cannonading was heard, signaling ongoing naval action in the area.
A dispatch to the Evening Standard from Scarborough reports twelve people killed during the bombardment this morning in Scarborough. The casualty toll reflects a deadly attack impacting residents and visitors amid ongoing hostilities in the area.
London reports British warships attacked the Germans after today’s bombardment. No result has been confirmed yet, but it is said two German cruisers have been sunk. The British press bureau has not confirmed this report.
Hartlepool December 6 reports a naval engagement off the port with cannonading so intense that windows are breaking in town as ships exchange fire and distant explosions echo along the coast.
Whitby reports bombardment damage with at least one fatality and several injuries. Houses toppled and the historic abbey at Hilda partially destroyed, marking a severe strike on the town.
Petrograd reports Emperor Yoshihito of Japan offered to send troops to aid Russia against Germany. A Russian official says the mikado asked to join in the war and received an affirmative reply. Ten tentative plans exist for Japanese soldiers to participate in active operations, with movement said to begin at once.
At dawn a German cruiser bombarded Scarborough England, firing about 40 shells. The town hall sustained heavy damage while the wireless station escaped intact. The attack caused significant destruction to the town hall and nearby infrastructure.
Paris reports eight miles from Ostend as French and Belgian forces push back Germans on the Belgian coast. Franco-Belgian line stretches a mile and a half from Lombartryde to St Georges near the Yser canal amid shelling and fierce fighting south of Ypres. Leaders Joffre and French require the elbow to be held at all costs as attacks and counterattacks continue.
Petrograd reports all German forces expelled from the Miana region and the Russian drive against the Thorn Soldau front resumed. Germans pushed back across the East Prussian border, considered too disorganized to mount heavy resistance. Elsewhere on the front, Russian lines hold.
King Peter and Crown Prince George rode into Belgrade at the head of victorious Servian troops. They were greeted by a tumultuous welcome from residents who stayed during the Austrian occupation. Solemn high mass followed in the cathedral with the royal party and staff.
Nish Dec 16 an official Servian statement reports all Austrian soldiers driven from Servia. No enemy remains on their soil. A list of notables tortured and killed is appended. Bodies of boys girls and old people were found bayoneted and some show signs of having been burned alive.
