Mrs Janet Carlyle Hanning, sole surviving sister of the English author Thomas Carlyle, died in Toronto at W. J. Laing’s residence. She had lived quietly in Hamilton and moved to Toronto in frail health after a daughter’s death. Buried beside her husband in Hamilton.
