Naugatuck sergeant promoted after wartime service
Staff Sergeant Frank Wojtczak of Spring Street Naugatuck has been promoted from sergeant to a higher rank after serving 34 months overseas with the Americal Division. He was a machine gun platoon leader veteran of Guadalcanal and Bougainville campaigns and earned the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two battle stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He worked as a partner maker for the Eastern Malmot Tun Company of Naugatuck.

Ivard J Welch, a former postal clerk and civil engineer, died Sunday at the Veterans Hospital. He lived in North Haven for eight years, previously in Naugatuck and Gol fiver. Survived by wife Emma Welch of North Haven and several relatives. Funeral services set at Walker-Eveters Chapel in New Haven and St Barnabas Church in North Haven with burial at St Barnabas.

A late night auto incident on Cross Street left two dogs injured and bystander Robert Hillson among those hurt. Patrol officers described the scene as chaotic with several bystanders rushing to aid. Dr Vito Casolla attended the injured at the location.
Elderly Crystal Lake man dies at home
A 43 year old resident of Crystal Lake died suddenly Sunday night at his home. He had been active locally and was known in the community. Police reported no immediate foul play and an investigation was expected to determine the cause.

Local Soldier Earns Bronze Star Medal
Staff Sergeant Ellard O. Nelson of Naugatuck Connecticut received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service as crew chief of a PAT Thunderbolt at a Belgian base. He maintained the Thunderbolt for 100 consecutive combat missions without a return to base. Nelson repaired and serviced the aircraft during dive bombing and low level strafing missions supporting American ground troops as the Thunder Bombs unit moved from Wise through France and Belgium.
