A four story Charter Oak public school on Charter Oak avenue in Martford was gutted by fire last night. Loss estimated at 70000 dollars. Fire started in the top floor and spread despite two alarms and active efforts by firemen. The building housed about 740 scholars and was erected by the South school district. Pupils will be distributed to other district schools. Cause of fire unknown.
United States Steel chairman Albert Gary denies Pittsburg reports that curtailment and mass layoffs are planned. He says the company remains 68 to 60 percent of capacity, with 215000 to 225000 employees on average and current staffing within 20 percent of that peak.
