Phonograph linked to telephone foresees on demand replay

A Danish engineer develops a phonograph telephone hybrid that records speaker words for later playback, differing from Edison's design by using a steel band and erasable chalk-like recording. Other notes include Pingree potato patch results in Columbus and a novel electric Ohio-Norwalk railroad plan with 40 mph target and 15,000 volt AC system.

Derby Ends 65 Year Stage Run After Blizzard Record

Stamford notes Silas Derby retires after 65 years operating a Greenwich to Bankville stage line. He once boasted 43 years with no trip missed, nearly froze during the 1888 blizzard before being dug out. Also in town, Newtown’s John D. Peck, wealthy farmer, dies aged 80, survived by widow and two children.

A successful trial of Pollak Wirng rapid automatic telegraphing connected New York and Chicago. Messages from World Office to Tribune Chicago were sent via Pittsburg and Fort Wayne at about 1000 words per minute, with two seconds per complete dispatch.

Washington Man’s Sunlight Power Could Transform War
