More than 2,000 residents packed the Congregational Church steps to witness the downtown Norwalk holiday light ceremony. Fire Chief John J. Shethin spoke as arches and a giant sign spelling Greetings lit up the streets. The town plans nightly illuminations through Christmas week, with organizers praising community effort and wishing all a merry season. Meanwhile in Washington, the House Rules committee prepares to discuss the European stop-gap measure.

John Joseph Malesky 42 of 85 Spring Street died last night at Waterbury hospital after a brief illness. Born August 72 1905 in Naugatuck he served in the Army ordinance maintenance unit in World War II with campaigns in Northern France the Rhineland the Ardennes and Central Europe earning multiple medals. Survived by two sisters and two brothers, he was a member of Crusader Post VFW. Funeral from Fitzgerald Funeral Home 820 North Main Street Thursday at 8 15 am to St Marys Church burial in St James Cemetery. Friends may visit tonight 7 10 pm and Wednesday 2 7 10 pm. Clifford Schofield 48 prominent athlete and World War I veteran dies early this morning at Rocky Hill Veterans Hospital. Known as Skin in Naugatuck, he played for Rubber City Big Five under Richard ParkIngen during the 1920s and also baseball, remembered for agility on the basketball court. He lived in Naugatuck, later at 39 Central Avenue with the VanDelft family, before entering Noroton and then Rocky Hill. born August 15, 1890 in Thomaston, he was a parishioner of St Michael's Episcopal Church and member of Centennial Lodge and Naugetude American Legion No. 17. He leaves a brother Raith Leroy Schofield of Hartford. military funeral at St Michael's Church Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Burial Grove Cemetery.
A New York woman identified as Mrs. Marton Hosley died when her automobile on Mevitt Parkway left the road near Greenwich and struck a tree. Her husband McDowell Hosley was injured but not critically.
