Private First Class Louis J. Lengyel of Naugatuck Conn. escaped a German artillery shell near him on the Italian front while checking a break in wire communications with the Powder River Division of General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army. Lengyel, who has been overseas 18 months, crouched as shells burst nearby and afterward declared he would not yield to the danger. His Lewis Street home address is 190.
