Hazelton Pa Aug 25 10000 miners formed a mobile cordon around Cranberry and No 40 collieries to bar entry. Foreman August Scheuch was stabbed three times saving his son and taken to hospital with internal injuries. Non unionists were beaten and kidnapped. city largely deserted. Police chief Sharif Jacobs pledged arrests as union men clashed with authorities.
Washington reports the Central Federation union of New York may ask Roosevelt to convene Congress in a special session to end the coal strike. Experts doubt Congress could act unless it passes resolutions or a compulsory arbitration law, both unlikely given union opposition. New York also sees Russell Sage urging J Pierpont Morgan to broker a settlement, arguing Morgan’s influence could swiftly end the strike.
J Mccarthy chair and Matthew Long with Henry Silverman of Hazeltown Pa arrive in New York to urge an arbitration conference. It is understood the committee’s visit is prompted by remarks from Bishop Fotte and J. Ier we.
Aug 25 Manila reports official cholera totals 25 664 cases and 18 040 deaths with many unseen cases. Luzon provinces show severe outbreaks, Locos Norte reported 414 cases and 317 deaths last Saturday. Narve constabulary ambushed near Magdalena Sor soron. one officer killed, two wounded, three captured as bandits attacked with gifts and bolos.
Mary E. Chadwick a 64 year old blind woman woke amid insomnia and wandered at 9 Russell street. She fell down stairs shortly after 2 am breaking her neck and dying instantly. The fall caused a base of skull fracture. Dr Fuller certified accidental death.
Saturday night in Thomas Ratykiewich’s saloon on Spring street a brawl between Polanders and Lithuanians used billiard cues tables and chairs as weapons. Officer McBiernay arrested three combatants after they battered each other. one man was bleeding from a head wound. All were held in the lockup on bonds of 10 dollars each and later released. Another intoxication arrest occurred. bonds forfeited when court met. Five cues were broken and furniture damaged. Judge Hamilton would not have let bonds stand if he knew the circumstances.
Washington 25. Lieutenant General Nelson A Miles has not informed the War Department of his intended Philippine visit. He plans to depart within weeks, seek the president's consent, and may face relief from command if held back. Miles twice sought service there, including proposals to command in China and to end the war with a plan Roosevelt and Root deemed a critique of army comrades.
Chicago Aug 25 The long beef shortage is ending as supply now meets demand and prices start easing toward normal. Retailers still charge higher prices than months ago but the cause is not cattle scarcity. Wholesalers and retailers aim to recover losses from last winter while prices are expected to fall in coming days.
Meriden on August 25 reports the city’s entire streetcar system halted after a large smokestack fell and demolished all but one boiler. The incident disrupted transit citywide with crews assessing damage and operations suspended.

An 81 year old Hartford man Cornelis Goodrich attacked his son William during a dispute last night. The elder man seized an axe but was disarmed, then slashed the son's throat with a knife. The wound is not believed to be fatal and the case will go before a jury.
Pine Orchard, Aug 25. The summer colony is worried over Russell Chatfield, a young man visiting for the summer. He went out in a row boat early yesterday to search for a lost boat and had not returned by early morning, and it is feared he met with an accident.
