State Seeks To Buy Bluff Point Land in Groton
Gov. Thomas J. Meskill seeks Bond Commission approval for 2.9 million to acquire 475 acres of Bluff Point adjacent to Bluff Point State Park. The purchase would add about 13,000 linear feet of shoreline for public use and nearly seal the peninsula under state ownership, protecting coastal marches. The parcels total 425 acres and 50.4 acres, expanding public access and conservation.

Guards Save Girl From Riptide at Marshfield Beach
Patricia A. Mellon, 18, of West Roxbury, was rescued by lifeguards after a riptide swept her about 150 yards from Fieldston Beach. Her father, James Mellon, a Boston officer, attempted a rescue and was saved by a friend. Lifeguards placed her on a surfboard and performed mouth to mouth resuscitation while returning to shore. Key rescuers included John Englehardt, Mark Tanguay, and Joe McNulty. Both Mellon and her father were treated at Jordan Hospital and released. The town closed beaches for the day and portions of Duxbury Beach Park were shut due to the riptide.
