Washington reports the sultan of Bacolod sent a defiant note to the United States, threatening attack if Americans remain. Captain Pershing notes three strong forts, 800 defenders, and local chiefs warn natives against aiding Americans as Manila plans to quell cholera and secure Lake Mindanao while troop movements accelerate.
Aug 20 MANILA There are no new developments in the Moro situation on Mindanao. General Chaffee is expected to reach Cebu but has not yet been reported there. An order from Washington denying action in the Moro case to Chaffee may not have reached him. It is believed he will bolster forces on Mindanao and issue an ultimatum to Moros. About 27 000 American troops are in the Philippines and could be spared for action. Captain John J. Pershing reports a fierce intertribal fight near Camp Vickers Mindanao at Wedding. Thirty two killed outright and many wounded. No Americans were involved.
Major John Biddle Porter, just back in Washington after negotiating with the Vatican, says in a final audience with the pope and Cardinal Rampolla both affirmed that the Spanish friars and monks in the Philippines would be withdrawn.
In St Paul Minnesota a counterfeiters plant unearthed by United States secret service officers contained nearly 500 dollars in spurious coins. A mold for making silver dollars was found. A Frazer known as BE A Bryant and Edward Brown were arrested, arraigned, pleaded not guilty and held in default of 3000 dollar bonds each.

A Daily Express dispatch from St Petersburg reports a cavalry squadron during maneuvers near London charged suddenly and galloped into a river. Fifty men are believed drowned. Details are scarce and verification is difficult.

In Trinion New Jersey on August 20 the New Jersey State Federation of Labor passed a resolution urging Governor Murphy to remove State factory Inspector John G. Ward for alleged negligence in enforcing child labor laws. Ward denied the charges before the convention and was questioned by delegates.
Albert Christie a known politician and hotel keeper was arrested on a Coroner issued warrant amid an inquest into the death of Daniel Ann a locktender. Evidence hinted Christie may be tied to the drowning but he denies any involvement calling the arrest an outrage.
In San Antonio on August 20 Thomas Holt, son of Captain William Trott of the U S quartermaster’s department, was shot and killed in a saloon. Marvey Tarrell, a mail route agent, was arrested and jailed, charged with the shooting after a dispute over a trivial matter.
Custom officers seized the United States fishing schooner Howard Holbrook of Gloucester Massachusetts at Canso on a charge of landing two casks of oil at Clarkes Harbor and seven pairs of rubber boots and a box of tobacco at Wrayton's Harbor without declaring to customs or paying duty.
