Battle at Peitzang drives Chinese losses high

A major battle near Peitzang saw allied forces attack at dawn. The Chinese trenches were taken on the first onslaught but Chinese forces regrouped and pressed the defense. Allied casualties were heavy while Chinese losses were described as enormous. American units involved included the Fourteenth Infantry and Ninth Infantry with accompanying artillery and marines.

Unknown youth shoots self after diving from boat

A young man about 21 jumped from the Edith yacht at Atlantic City after a brief cruise with a group of passengers. He surfaced, drew a pistol, and shot himself. Captain Parker and the crew tried to reach him, but the body vanished. The man wore a blue serge suit and slouch hat. identity remains unknown.

Foos Declared Legally Dead by Surrogate

Rochester Aug 7 Surrogate Benton declared Ange lus Foos legally dead after a long absence since 1887. Foos left the city amid financial trouble and never communicated with family. His wife Christine Foos sought the legacy left by her late parents and petitioned the court, citing failure to trace him despite letters to Carson City Nevada and to her brother Valentinne Crouse.

Burlington Storm Leaves City in Darkness and Damage

A violent Aug 7 storm roared through Burlington Vermont with rain, wind, and lightning. A tornado-like square mile damaged trees, roofs, and shipping. the passenger station was struck and tracks blocked. power and communications were knocked out across the city, with crops and vegetation harmed.
