A crowd of excursionists at Mount Desert ferry collapsed a gang plank over the Sappho. About 140 were in the water as the timbered plank gave way, many rescued after panic and chaos. The crush occurred as trains unloaded hundreds en route to Bar Harbor to view warships.
Benjamin H. Snell a 45 year old pension examiner attacked Liza Weissenberger a 13 year old girl in her Washington home. He seized the sleeping child and slashed her throat with a razor fracturing her neck while her mother intervened and was wounded. Snell was captured and jailed. he claims memory loss. He is a Vermont native with two children and formerly worked in a Montgomery bank.
The US steamer Badger reaches San Francisco with two Samoan commissioners from Honolulu and Apia. Bartlett Tripp and Baron Von Sternberg disembark and head to a hotel. N B Isluit sails toward Apia then London to report to Britain, with Isliot returning to the United States for now. The trio plan to depart by overland train to Washington tomorrow night.
Washington reports Consul General John Goodnow at Shanghai has ruled that a bond tied to the steamer Abbey must be paid for carrying arms from Canton to Luzon. The decision, cited by the North China Daily News, may curb arms shipments and funding to Filipino insurgents during the war, with European reception of Dewey noted. Also reports two rail accidents in Saunderstown and Juvisy, Paris, with deaths and injuries.
Bridgeport reports a deadly trolley plunge on the Shelton road near Peck's Bridge Stratford. Car No 2 laden with pleasure seekers fell about 50 feet into a gulch, many killed or injured, conductor John Carroll and motorman George Hamilton among the responders. The scene drew hundreds as families mourned, with one lifeless baby found in a dead woman’s arms and a 5 year old with a broken arm. A second car derailed later that night, blocking the line without injuries.
