Tennyson Memorial Beacon Unveiled on Isle of Wight
In Freshwater down on the Isle of Wight the Tennyson memorial beacon was unveiled by Rev George Granville Bradley dean of Westminster. The Ionic cross beacon near the poet's favorite walk will be visible for miles and drew a large gathering including the archbishop of Canterbury and Lord and Lady Tennyson. Subscriptions largely came from the United States and the ceremony coincided with the poet's birthday. Tomorrow Bishop Whipple will deliver a commemorative discourse at Freshwater parish church honoring Tennyson.
