A Wooster Street residence owned by Mr and Mrs Harey Monroe was struck by lightning during a heavy storm. The occupants evacuated about 1:25 PM and returned to find smoke and fire in a bedroom, likely started by a lightning strike to a radio wire. Mr Monroe and Mr Jeznach controlled the blaze before firefighters were notified. The storm also knocked out about 75 telephone services on Maple Road and dropped rainfall totaling 0.21 inches, providing relief from recent heat.
More than 3,000 Portuguese Americans from New England, New York, and New Jersey filled streets and Linden Park for the annual parade and field day.
