Hartford April 28 Under votes the legislature approved 206000 for a water supply at Mansfield State Training School and Hospital and the Connecticut Agricultural College at ALOLTA. Gov J H Trumbull to appoint by May 1 a three member commission to obtain a watershed and construct dams conduits for the water system. Senate also authorized a 29 appropriation to purchase a sword for Jipat. Leslie L Arnold of the U S Air Service is noted.
A Binghamton farmer, Charente Bomrer, familiarly known as Bomrer, was killed while trying to move a bull described as vicious on his farm ten miles north of Jeoe Sort Fenton. Witnesses said the animal attacked and the farmer attempted to defend himself. authorities report the motive as a protective act gone wrong.
An automobile owned and driven by Abe Wood struck 7 year old Carla Santille as she crossed the road in Middlebury around 6 pm. The inquest by Coroner John Monsani found Wood blameless after witnesses described a rapid sequence of events and Wood attempted to avoid the child. The boy suffered a fractured skull and died at the scene.
Great Falls Montana April 28 Senator Burton K Wheeler of Montana faces trial in federal court over alleged misuse of office. He is set to testify again as cross examination continues regarding an alleged offer to split fees with New York attorney George B Hayes to handle government oil permits for Gordon Campbell. Wheeler previously denied meeting Hayes after Hayes stated the arrangement. The defense rests with one more witness remaining.
First week of the tent caterpillar drive reports strong effort by scouts removing pest nests. Weather has favored egg hatching and caterpillar activity. The News seeks public subscription of 25 dollars to award medals to troops with most nests found. five dollars already donated. Aims to reach twenty dollars more with small donations welcomed.
Washington April 23 Diplomatic circles were stirred by the arrest of Senor Don Jorge Blac Jofre attaché of the Bolivian embassy following a free for all fight with a policeman. He was overpowered and taken to a police station where he claimed immunity and was released. Police records show the altercation occurred during a disturbance caused by a party and a bartender.
New York April 28 Captain John Roberts of the White Star liner Homeric explained he did not lower lifeboats to aid the Japanese steamer Raifuku Maru, which perished with all 38 crew off the Nova Scotia coast, saying there was no one to rescue and no orders given.
London reports that British Chancellor Churchill may tax whiskey exports to the United States at three pounds per gallon. The plan would raise prices for Scotch in America by about 3.75 dollars per quart, aiming to boost British revenue. Currently no export tax exists, while a home liquor tax pushes Americans to buy cheaper Scotch in New York.
The body of Lloyd Collins, trapped in an underground cavern at Sand Cave, Cave City Kentucky, for two months, was brought to the surface this morning. The body was in good condition due to the low cave temperature. After embalming, it will lie in state at Cave City for three or four days before funeral rites proceed. Continued on Page 8.
