A severe wind and snow storm swept across New England and nearby states causing widespread damage. Wrecked roofs, uprooted trees, and overturned houses were reported from Connecticut to Ohio, with multiple injuries and extensive property damage.
Post office staff inform patrons about the upheaval caused by new postal rates for newspapers and post cards. Officials outline remailed papers 2 cents per 100 items and parcel post charges, plus delivery and registry fees, urging customers to use correct rates to speed mail handling and improve service.
In St. Paul Nebraska on April 20 Mrs. Della Sorenson 28 of Dannebrog was declared sane at a hearing but will be admitted as a patient at Flastines State hospital after confessing to poisoning seven people from the 1920s to 1928 She admitted giving strychnine to two of her own babies her husband his mother two Cooper children and the infant child of Christina Brock This followed a quarrel with her husband and alleged gossip about her
Peter Geraldi of 72 High Street Shelton faced a coroner's hearing after his car struck and killed 9 year old Virginia Panerilla on Bridgeport Avenue. Officials say the child crossed then retraced steps while Geraldi, driving at a nominal speed, could not avoid the fatal impact. He was arrested on a manslaughter by automobile charge.
Liberty lodge Sons of St George will welcome Grand President Monies Kekerstey of Middletown as unofficial guest at Pythian hall tomorrow evening. Attending grand president’s party will be several members. After the business session, refreshments and social time follow. Also notes: petitions in bankruptcy filed in New Haven and Stamford for Charles J Sellitt tobacconist and William I Bickel with liabilities and assets listed.
Naugaluckians shivered as the coldest weather in memory persisted. light snow fell heavily this morning and again this afternoon, covering streets and prompting residents to turn to winter coats stored away.
During yesterday afternoon heavy rain a driver on Mah Avenue hit and toppled two traffic signs at North Main Maple and Maple Church junctions. A mailbox on Hotchkiss was knocked over, and a Church Street sign was damaged. Edward Nicholson of Bridgeport was ordered to appear in borough court tomorrow morning.
Angelo Gelsei of Westmoreland county was executed by electric chair in Bellefonte on April 20 after an 17 month murder case against his wife. He walked to the chair calmly and was pronounced dead at 7 09 a m.
Nilguluck declares annual clean-up week underway as a drenching rain clears sidewalks and streets. The Chamber of Commerce offers wholesale shrubs including Norway maples elms oaks Crimean lindens and sugar maples with shrubs like honeysuckle syringa for shady spots. Irene L. Squires welcomes inquiries at 676. H. B. Chittenden leads the clean-up committee urging homeowners to remove rubbish and brighten total buildings with painting efforts.
A regular meeting of Naugatuck Lodge No. 640 Fraternal Order of Eagles will be held tonight at 8 o'clock in the Eagles hall in the Odd Fellows building. Officers for the ensuing year will be nominated. the new officers will be installed in June.
The Contpregational church announced a morning bulletin plan for a “Very Member Canvass.” Subscription cards will be mailed this week and should be returned by the end of the week to avoid afternoon visits. Subscriptions can also be made after the morning service.
Two year old Vincent Tatarinovich of Wood street Waterbury is hospitalized at St Marys with severe burns after topppling into a pail of scalding water. Police say mother was preparing to scrub the kitchen floor when the accident occurred. Doctors state injuries cover legs and lower body but prognosis is uncertain.
The local boy scout council postpones their annual trip to Camp Pershing on the Housatonic for one week. Hoyt Harmon notes 260 bags donated by New Haven Railroad will shore up the river embankment at the camp site and be placed during the visit. About 20 council members plan to attend.
Hugh W. Burns a prominent First ward Democrat and former deputy sheriff today resigns from the newly elected town committee. He was one of three First ward members and served on the finance committee. Chairman Joseph L. Jackson will call a special meeting of the remaining eight members to name Burns’ successor.
Opening of the women's mission at St Francis church drew large crowds last evening and this morning with Vincentian fathers guiding the services. Next week a men’s mission is planned to follow.
Rev. G Ohslund of New Haven and Rev. A Ahlquist of New Britain will conduct an admission in the Salem Lutheran church tomorrow evening at o'clock. The mission will be for one evening only, held in connection with the Hartford district clergy meeting at the Swedish Lutheran church on Cherry street in Canterbury tomorrow and Wednesday. Rev. Hilmer Larson, pastor, will attend the district conversion session on Wednesday.
Chairman Chittenden urges a year long campaign to stop tin can disposal in streets and lots. Health Officer Baker warns cans attract flies and mosquitoes, spreading contagion and increasing medical costs, suggesting immediate action to brighten the town and cut bills.
Members of the boy scouts troops here will take part in this week's municipal clean up week activities. The boys will see that the premises about their homes are cleaned up the cellar as well as back yards and they will report any places where a clean up is needed.
Joseph Armenal 18 joins The News Auto Gift Club showing strong early effort with many friends optimistic about sizable prizes including automobiles. The club announces closing rules for April 25 at 9 pm with final audits by four local businessmen and strict submission deadlines for subscriptions and counts.
Funeral services were held for William C. Bell of Lewis Street, fatally injured when a Buick touring car veered off the road at Tarrytown Lake, grazing trees and a rock. The accident occurred about 11:45 Wednesday night. Bell was killed, another passenger injured, and a fence extension recommended.
