Eight local physicians gathered Monday afternoon at the public library basement for a social meeting and discussion on appendicitis. They traveled from New Hampton by auto and dined with area doctors at the De Noyelles Hotel before the session. Attending were Drs A Babcock O M Landon F S Feeney N Shilling I K Gardner Paul B Gardner of New Hampton and Drs L H Goodale and J D Horton of Nashua.
Dennis Crandall, a shoe repairer at 915 East Fourth Street, was arrested Wednesday evening on a lewd and immoral conduct charge with children. Mothers of six girls testified that Crandall lured them to a back room with promises of money and gifts, threatening jail if they spoke. Investigators say the abuse continued for months with more victims likely to come forward.
Crandall, a mute, faces potential penitentiary time or a 500 dollar fine as a state Water loo Reporter notes the forthcoming hearing could rival the strangest in city history. Charles S Parks dies in Brooklyn after long illness with a history spanning Ohio Wisconsin Illinois Iowa and Texas. He served in the 48th Iowa Infantry, married in 1870, and rests at Greenwood Cemetery after funeral at the M. church.
Delegates elected at the recent primary will meet at the court house in New Hampton on June 25 1908 at 11 am to elect 12 delegates to the state convention at Sioux City and fill any ticket vacancies. They will also elect a chairman of the county central committee for two years and address other Democratic party business. Jos E Nopis serves as chairman. Regular meeting of Nashua Chapter No 248 C B S will be held June 18 1908 at Ma semie Hall with Mrs B C Bausmaen as secretary.
W P Raymond received a Sunday message that his father B A Raymond died in Mason City that morning. He left immediately to bring the remains to Waukon for the funeral held Tuesday. Raymond had heart trouble and had recently come to Nashua to stay with his son. He had visited a brother in Mason City before falling ill and did not recover. The son was with him most the time but returned home Friday to tend to affairs. The deceased was a pleasant man who made many friends during his brief stay in the area. W P Raymond was an only child of the late E A Raymond.
Miss Lillian Mass of Marble Rock died a week after a cyclone visit, reportedly from brain congestion caused by fright. She was 22, adopted daughter of Mrs. Jinma Mass. A land transfer appeared in Waverly Democrat describing sale of west side business property from Gonge K. Harker to Charles R. Cave for 2775 dollars. The Metropolitan Church Association, linked to the Hilly Jumpers, was said to influence the deal through Rev. De Right of Waukesha Wisconsin.
A delivery wagon carrying Timothy Conley and several young men en route to the Orphanage Home picnic overturned on an uneven road. Timothy, 10, died Wednesday morning from injuries while others were thrown or dashed, with some escaping the vehicle as they clung to stay aboard. The incident involved his mother Mrs. Mary Conley of Waverly.
A boy fell beneath a rear wheel and suffered abdominal injuries as a wheel passed over him. Internal damage caused a prolonged struggle before death. His widowed mother receives the community’s sympathy in this bereavement as reported by the Waverly Independent.
The forty fourth annual convention of the Town Sunday School Association will be held at Marshalltown Iowa in the First Methodist Episcopal church. The first session opens Monday June 29 at 1 30 p m with noted national speakers and over 800 delegates expected. C H McNider of Mason City head banker of the M W A sues to recover 250000 in Woodmen funds from the First National Bank of Chariton Iowa after its failure. He held a 100000 security bond signed by bank directors, now believed forged by F R Crocker former Cresco Times cashier.
Des Moines dispatch reports candidate G. N. Haugen was the first congressional hopeful to file his expense account with the secretary of state as required by law. The total is 34.70 dollars, with postage as the principal item. The note calls this the cheapest campaign ever conducted in the district.
The Republican National Convention met at the Coliseum in Chicago with 12,000 attendees. A major contest centers on the anti injunction plank as administration allies clash with Roosevelt policy foes, shaping Taft as the likely presidential candidate.
Society page reports the engagement of Miss Isabel Morrison to Bernhardt H Hopkins. The couple, son of Mrs H A Hopkins, was announced at a Tuesday afternoon party hosted by Mrs James A Morrison. The reception featured an acrostic game and a heart themed décor with red and white motifs and a Cupid ornament.
For the week ending June 15 1908 Des Moines area records show below normal average temperatures and sunshine across the state. The northeastern region ran under normal while the southwestern area saw above normal conditions. Scattered showers occurred in parts of the state.
The week saw varied rainfall with four dry days, while corn fields received strong cultivation in most areas. Some fields remain waterlogged in river bottoms and flat lands, delaying work, but overall staple crops benefit from cool weather. Final acreage likely similar to last year, with reduced expectations due to wet fields. cherries promise large yields, strawberries look fair, apples are expected light.
