Des Moines reports indicate a special session of the 45th G A will push emergency measures and attempt adjournment before Christmas. Tax revision and a one percent gross sales tax are discussed, with committees drafting proposals to balance state revenues and property taxes amid administration pressure and potential vetoes.
The Moscow dam plan to divert Cedar River water to Muscatine to power an 80 foot drop was rejected 67 to 35 after two days of floor debate. Opponents warned of widespread waterways liberalization and loss of riparian rights. The project would have displaced highways, required cow bridges, and destroyed a lake near Muscatine.
The Good Will drive enters its last decisive phase on December 6 as workers rush to collect remaining subscriptions for a final wind to win big prizes on December 16. The Nashua Reporter lauds early efforts, urges swift action, and warns no subscriptions will be accepted after 12 noon on December 16, asking who will win the Ford or Chevrolet coach or cash.
Bradford Lodge No 129 marks 75 years since its 1858 charter by the Grand Lodge of Iowa. The marriage of Fra Sch albz of Ionia and Wilmet Weber of New Haven took place Saturday morning December 2 at St Peter's Catholic Church with Rev Fr A N Tees officiating. The couple were attended by Mr and Mrs John Dashh, Dashh is a niece of the groom. A wedding dinner followed at the couple's home west of New Haven.
Agricultural economists at Iowa State College say farm income in 1984 will improve. Hog numbers are expected to fall from 1983 levels due to slaughter under a federal program and a poor corn-hog outlook. Exports of hog products remain weak, with high pork and lard stocks weighing on prices. Beef cattle feeding looks brighter in Iowa, aided by feed on hand and a strong corn crop, while dairy prospects are less favorable due to rising milk cow numbers and high storage stocks. Urban incomes rose, boosting potential demand for farm products if sustained. Liberal credit for agriculture is expanding, with extended loans on corn anticipated.
Bassett couple Miss Annetta Auchstetter and Mr Deal L Wiltse wed in a Tuesday ceremony at the Christian parsonage in Charles City with a single ring service. Miss Grate Henniger daughter of Mr and Mrs Den Henniger formerly Nashua, married Friday in New Hampton to Mr Toy Evenson of Erkton Minnesota. They stopped in Nashua after the ceremony en route to Ranfalia Iowa to visit her parents. The bride stayed with Harry Milligan in Nashua for years and attended Nashua High School. The couple will reside in Elkton Minnesota.
Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors bought a rock crusher from Universal Mfg. Co. for Civil Works Administration work near the Lee Bueck farm southeast of town. About 25 men will operate it to surface roads, with installation expected by the end of the week. The Cedar Rapids purchase followed a Thursday trip. the firm was expanding to meet orders from 15 counties.
The Little Theater Guild changes the date for their trot play The Adopted stalling new water mains and Father from Dec 16 to Dec 20. Cast rehearsals were postponed from Monday after a meeting with Raymond Berrier, who will direct. The group invites locals and countryside residents to join, with Bob Goodsell at the Reporter office for contact.
An additional fourteen men are being employed through the Civil Works Administration in this district to perform road graveling work in Bradford Chickasaw and Richland townships.
Funeral services for Arthur Holcomb who died Tuesday Nov 28 1933 were held at his mother Almeda Holcomb’s home Friday at 130 pm Rev G C Lusted of the Methodist church conducted the service Interment was in Greenwood cemetery Pallbearers were HE W Cagley John Gorg Walden Scoles and Russell Scoles Those from a distance attending included Mrs Bila Barney and Mr and Mrs James Barney of Floyd Mr and Mrs Carl Barney of Rudd Mrs Carrie Hughes of Chickasaw and Mrs Roral Grady of Plainfield An appreciation from Mrs Almeda Holcomb expressing thanks for sympathy and floral offerings followed.
Mr and Mrs A C Davidson and sons Don and Carroll attended the funeral for their nephew Harold Newell age 50 killed in a Sunday night auto crash. Newell with Howard Clements Cedar Rapids Mrs Newell and 30 month old son were returning from Cedar Rapids when their car collided with a car driven by Robert Blackburn Eldora. Newell died instantly Clements seriously injured others escaped with minor injuries. An uncle was killed in an auto accident near the same spot about a year earlier.
October auto toll in Iowa recorded 76 killed and 1 255 injured across 1 248 crashes. Compared with last year, 5 killed and 1 000 injured. Total killed year to date 446 vs 419 previous year. Pedestrians accounted for 25 of the deaths. 150 female drivers and 1 267 male drivers involved. Primary causes listed include speeding reckless driving and wrong side of road with other factors like skidding and passing standing street cars noted.
W. B. Smith and tenant Vernon Laird were the first to apply for and receive a corn loan in the county, with other applications reportedly filed Monday. Sealers D. J. McGrath Jr and M. A. Kepple of Nashua S H Sheakley of New Hampton and W D Purdy of Fredericksburg oversaw the process, sealing a 1500 bushel Smith Laird crib. The county is organized and expects many farmers to seek cash via this program.
A police report notes a3 cars ran away with no driver and 22 continuing along a crowded roadway. Di and ron driver 38 followed Lea closely despite signals. Nine drivers were asleep and three drank. Many collisions occurred with trucks buses and pedestrians. October peak hours show most accidents on Sunday then Saturday.
Charles City Lions Club members attended the Nashua club bi monthly luncheon at Steele’s Cafe Monday. About thirty five guests heard Dr Erickson of Charles City give a talk on Lionism after business was completed.
Miss Marion Speedling will sing over radio station WMT Waterloo next Saturday evening December 9 at 9:30 accompanied at the piano by Miss Ethel Hammond.
A benefit movie program will be held at the opera house Saturday evening, December 9, to defray expenses of the Christmas program. Admission is 10 and 15 cents. Merchants are offering prizes to be won by saving the coupon on your ticket at the show.

The Christmas Seal Sale begins the day after Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas. Seals have been mailed out and receivers are asked to purchase what they can and return the rest in the enclosed envelope. They thank friends for thoughtful messages and flowers and apologize for delayed service. Only four or five debtors offered assistance, not charity, just reasonable payment on outstanding accounts.
Near Hedrick in geekuk county farmer Craft, aged 92, has barefooted life from knees down for 82 years. He leaves his shoes at home for work and trips and travels corn fields shoeless in cold weather. Neighbors say he remains in good health and can pick corn and perform farm tasks without shoes.
