Young Ladies Entertain at Leap Year Ball
A ball hosted by twenty one young ladies at the opera house on Tuesday evening marked the first leap year social of the season. Invited gentlemen praised the charming entertainment and were later sent to Ed Watts' restaurant for a late supper featuring brown and white bread, pork, tongue, salads, pickles, eggs, coffee, and desserts.

Narrow Escape For Chas Heath in Train Wreck
Chas Heath of North Yakima Washington arrived Monday for a visit with his mother in law Mrs Ferdinand Getsch. Heath was a passenger on the ill fated Sif train wrecked at Glendive Montana last week. A burning bridge sent Ancogine and two droaches to their deaths. Four people died and five were injured. In the Pullman car all were unharmed and Heath was in a sleeper car moments before tragedy. A wealthy man who spoke with him earlier perished in the smoker. Heath helped tend the dead and injured.

Illness Claims Life Of Ida Klunder At Pleasant Valley
Ida B Klunder daughter of Mr and Mrs W Klunder died after a two day illness at home five miles south and 27 miles east of Prosper school house. She was a bright student who attended school Monday and Tuesday before falling ill. A bronchial pneumonia caused her death with rumors of black diphtheria and a nearby school closure. Funeral held at Pleasant Valley church Saturday at 2 pm with burial in the local cemetery.

Weather summary for the week ending August 17 1908 in Des Moines Iowa notes average daily temperatures near normal in southeast Iowa and about five degrees below normal in the northwest. Sunshine was abundant and rainfall exceeded normal across most of the state with two to eight inches in central counties and heavy showers in east central and northeast districts. No rain shortage exists but extreme southeast could use more moisture. Some local wind squalls damaged corn. lightning was severe. Rain slowed stacking and threshing, some minor damage to a house from moisture, but crops including corn potatoes grass and pastures benefited. Rains improved plowing conditions and threshing results matched last week. Apple crop will be very small. Future notes focus on corn condition in next bulletin.
