James Dawdy of Jewell City and Clara Young of this city were married by Rev C. E. Tinker at the M E F Parsonage at five o clock Wednesday evening May 1. Dawdy, a carpenter, is well regarded. Young, daughter of Mrs E J Young, has been a popular resident. They will reside in Jewell City.
All Masons are notified of a special business meeting at the A F and A M hall on Saturday night May 20. All Past Masters are especially requested to be present. Geo. Smith W M.
Commencement week began with a baccalaureate sermon by Rev L Keeler at the M E church to a large audience. The program featured duets by Mrs Ethel Holly and Mrs Eitha Whitney, a solo by Mrs W Yoder, and a male quartet. Class Day and commencement events included a reception at the Cerny building, class poems, orations, and diplomas presented by Prof Karr at Emporia.
A tragedy east of Thompson Nebraska on a Saturday evening left Ray Wiggins and his seven year old son dead after a private bridge over Rose Creek failed in floodwaters. Wiggins attempted the rescue as the creek ran high from recent rains, but both disappeared beneath the swift current. The body of Mr Wiggins was recovered Sunday afternoon some distance away, while the child remained missing days later. Affected neighbors and railroad workers aided in searches. trains were halted to facilitate relief and recovery efforts. Wiggins left a wife and six other children, with life insurance reported at five thousand dollars.
Plant dealer W. S. Preble announces sweet potato plants are ready for setting out, indicating readiness and availability for gardeners.
H A Hall and Geo Anderson of Narka asked Republic County officials Monday to review telephone company assessments. The State Tax Commission handles such assessments for all property including buildings, opposing the local assessor’s entry. The county commissioners upheld the State Tax Commission position, ruling local assessors will not assess this property in Republic County.
Sweet potato cabbage and tomato plants will be ready about May 20 according to J J Hamilton. Grandma Schocke, injured by a fall down a cellar about a week ago, is slowly improving though still feeling unwell.
The notice claims a film promotion for Battle Cry of Peace shows a mass mobilization with 1600 National Guardsmen 800 G A R members 500 horses and riders and many weapons and machines. It promises dramatic siege scenes in New York City including fires dynamited buildings and invading troops with more sensational events.
