Red Cross Notes and Society Activities

Red Cross secretary has plenty of buttons for those not yet served. Thanks are offered to Mrs. J. Shovke for a wood donation. Regular meeting Saturday afternoon for work. Finance committee plans a Friday evening program March 15 with a box supper in Hollewiek Hall. Donors to Red Cross funds include James Mach, Aden Joy, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Day, Mrs. Frank Blecha, Mrs. Frank Sellar, Miss Mable Stephen, and others. New members listed. Articles shipped to Belleville February 15 include gowns, towels, pajamas, and other items. Entertains Sunday School class hosted by Mrs. E. E. Joy on February 22 with patriotic decor, games, and refreshments.

District Draft Board Lists Deferred Class Men

The Belleville Telescope reports district board classifications with many men placed in deferred status and ordered to return by March 1, 1918. It also lists men called for physical examination on March 7 with times and names, and notes a Midway school box supper that raised funds for the Red Cross and comfort kits.

Miss Maggie George Attends Teachers Meeting in Scandia

Miss Maggie George teaches near Chester Nebraska and spent Friday through Sunday with Miss Helen Saip. J H Saip and son Charles were Belleville visitors Friday while Misses Helen Saip Maggie George and Mrs Sammy Murray attended the Scandia teachers’ association. A turnout at the Munden Calendar program and a large box supper at Victo school were noted, with thrift stamps and Red Cross messaging encouraged.

Midway Box Supper Attended as Community Ties Grow

Attendance at a box supper at Midway Friday night drew many locals. Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Murray visited the J. H. Saip home Sunday. Mrs. Frank Godéden and children stayed with Ed Thomas before moving to Coffey county. Miss Mable Thomas stayed a week with her grandmother Mrs. Thomas. Miss Helen Saip visited Roscoe Spicer on Thursday. A sizable crowd also attended the Puckett sale Monday.

Labor plan urged to ease farm draft short age

In Washington on March 2 the Senate debated relief for farm labor shortages caused by the draft. Senators Borah McCumber Kirby and Williams pressed for a concrete labor program and faster ship production, warning uncertainty harms farmers and war effort.

District Court News from the Webruary Term Adjourned

The Webruary term of the District court adjourned Saturday and opened Monday in Washington. Only one trial occurred after settlements. a hung jury led to a guilty plea. Two divorces were granted, demurrers and legal points filled much of the term. Cases include Jellison v Dickin son, mortgage foreclosure Bartlett Bros. Land and Loan Co v Sweeney, and Blanchard v McFarland with multiple amendments and pleadings allowed.

Electric line to supply Agenda and Cuba towns

Work starts this week on a transmission line by Concordia Light Company to supply Agenda and Cuba with electricity for business and home use. A crew of about twelve will begin setting posts and stringing wire from Clyde, continuing the company’s practice in nearby small towns.
