The report notes Tommy Defitonce will teach in District 14 next year. Mrs. WH TE Shorthill returns home from Haddam after a week with her sister Mrs. Woolman. Various residents arrive home from visits in Cuba Concordia Mun-den and Kansas City with family updates and a local accident involving a car and a buggy with no serious injuries.
Lather Bouska will teach the island school southeast of town for the coming school year. Miss Luella Whitney left Monday for Lincoln to report for duty at the Leveretts Sanitarium to become a nurse. Mrs Chark and Miss Trazel Marshall of Hubbell visited for auto repairs. Dr J W West's mother Mrs Darren Harding arrived from California after visiting Belleville. The News thanks EK By Webster for a cake and punch gift at a gathering with samples of berries. Mrs James Seifert and family returned from Vona and Colorado trip. Jim Seifert improving and gaining strength, with a 10 pound gain and daily walks.
Miss Mable Shoemaker has accepted a position as assistant principal in Winona schools, bringing notable experience to the local district.
Kansas and Nebraska feeders led by J. M. Baker of Narka and O. C. Baker of Dunbar marketed multiple carloads of steers. Today's shipments included 4 carloads averaging 1279 pounds at 8.50 and 1,464 pounds at 8.75, with yesterday’s 6 carloads at 1,380 pounds y 8.50. A third Baker shipment weighed 1,049 pounds and sold at 8.15.
Thomas P. Emery of Mahaska Kansas born Stark County Illinois January 29 1838 died June 24 1913 at his home south of Mahaska He enlisted at 23 in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry and served through the Civil War He married Almeda Bevers December 28 1865 and had nine children seven sons and two daughters Surviving with his wife he moved from Clarke County Iowa to Washington County Kansas in 1883 was a member of the Christian Church since youth and funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at Mahaska conducted by Reverend Lowe of Belleville Kansas
The A. F. and A. M. Lodge of Narka led the cemetery services for Mr. Emery, a forty year member. He was a loving husband and father, a friend and neighbor who offered kind acts and cheering words in the community.
We thank neighbors and friends for kindness during the sickness and passing of our husband and father. Gratitude for floral offerings. Appreciation extended to the Presbyterian people for kindness and use of their church. Signed by Mrs. Emery and family.
Marsden and Narka met on Narky’s grounds for the season’s second clash. Both sides showed errors though the grounds played fast and both teams hit well. Munden led with 13 hits and 7 errors while the other side had 12 hits and 8 errors. Local notes recap school teaching changes and regional movements with several residents traveling for visits and shows.
E. B. Smith sells the Cuba Daylight to W. L. Shannon of Hanover who has twelve years in the newspaper business and takes charge this week. We wish Mr. Shannon success.
Val Seifert who ran the local butcher shop rented his shop and business and sold his stock to Art McKenna of Mahaska on a recent Saturday and gave possession. Seifert says he is quitting to rest after many years. McKenna brings several years of butcher experience and plans to continue the business as a family moves into the shop rooms.
During Sunday afternoon while Mr Orr was away, the depot office money drawer was relieved of twenty five dollars. A pried window and a removed screen allowed entry. Two stamped tickets were found unused. Mr Kenney was absent at the hospital and Mr Orr was temporarily covering. No clues have been found as we go to press.
