Local notes praise Christmas cheer and list births birthdays visits and visitors. Advertisements promote fruit nuts and candy for Christmas at Sorick and Soricks store. several residents are mentioned with family and social visits in Fairbury and nearby towns.
Russell C. Preble son of Mr and Mrs James Preble of Agenda Republic County died at Fort Pike Arkansas on Sunday December 16 1917 from pneumonia He was about twenty five and among Republic counties drafted men sent to training camps two months ago Funeral plans in Agenda were delayed as the body had not arrived by Thursday morning so funeral time could not be announced yet Burial is planned for Ida cemetery.
The Republic County local board mails out 371 questionaire blanks covering orders 1 through 871. Under the national order five percent a day must be mailed, equaling 67 per day, with completion expected by January 9. Recipients must return completed forms within seven days under a penalty of one year’s imprisonment, with free legal guidance from local attorneys.
The Farmers Union will hold their annual election on Saturday December 29. All members are requested to be present.
Readers publish a list of soldiers from the community serving in camps and abroad and urge Christmas letters. The notice includes addresses for Rudolph Hubka, Win Nemec, George and Jim Sorick, George and Frank Saip, Lester Blakesley, Joseph Brabee, Ed Lahodny, If. W. Burchett, J. Li. Shoemaker, and others, asking for updated addresses to continue the paper. The piece ends with social notes and local items from Narka and Belleville.
Christina Holechek and Emma Holan visited with Millie Hubka as Floyd Hawkins spoke in Narka about sending the local paper to soldiers with correct addresses. Hawkins urged workers to list jobs paying 10 dollars for relief of American prisoners in German camps and an employment committee will organize the effort.
