Local items note G H Newton of Eye Ear Nose and Throat at Fairbury Nebraska inspecting cases in Narka. Readers are directed to eye, ear, nose and throat services for appointments and information.
High school pupils attended a Thanksgiving program and box supper at Star school house. A Thursday Friday vacation followed for Thanksgiving. Reports are in English class with four books read this year, two written two oral. The county team beat by Cornfeds 23 19 with substitutes. Vic trola entertainment after dinner. Various local visits and family gatherings noted through the week including Miss McCall Miss Haukenberry and Miss Rosa Lovci at Midway.
In Clay County a debate rages over joining the Non-Partisan League at 16 dollars with supporters citing loyalty to the Stars and Stripes and opposition to the red flag. Opponents point to strong Farmers Union sentiment and anti League stances while I W W activity and labor relations draw contention. The Times questions whether a small class should control vital industries and urges wartime regulation against conspirators to protect food fuel and railroads.
The weekly West Lincoln items report a community Thanksgiving dinner at Highland, visits by Bennie Lasher to Robert Hoyder, and social calls among local families including Mr. and Mrs. Harlie Stacey Ruth Armes and baby. Illnesses are noted for Mrs. Will Wells but she improves, with other residents visiting relatives in Norway and Belleville.

The M. FE church announces Sunday school at 10 a m and morning worship at 11 with the message Like the Stars. Epworth League gathers at 6 30 p m while evening worship at 7 30 p m features Running from God But Too Honest to Steal a Ride. Prayer meeting Thursday at 7 30. Public welcome. Pastor H C Barrett.
In Hebron coal dealers face scarcity with many sold out and only coke available. Residents rushed to stockpile, leaving the town prepared for current conditions. Officials limit private and public purchases to half a ton to stretch supplies until new coal is mined. The city has adopted conservation measures in governance and private dealings.
District Court reports a naturalization hearing on Monday November 10 with Examiner C A Ramsey and Judge Hogin. Fourteen applicants appeared. three were approved Henry Skucius Belleville James Nordquist Agenda and Axel Johansson Cuba who changed his name to Axel J Smith to avoid mail confusion. Several cases continued due to language barriers war time rules and applicants’ residency or army status. Instruction in English and government is urged with free courses at Cuba and Tabor and a possible school at Narka.
Narka high school with 28 students 11 boys and 17 girls posted an excellent six week attendance. Average nearly 27 with only four tardies from the boys and thirty from the girls. George Bakins Blanche Brabee and Molly Cerny each had zero absences or tardies.
Concordia Kansas music shop Chappell's Music Store advertises a large piano line including Chickering Vietor and Edison phonographs. The store claims 25 to 30 pianos in stock and invites customers to see the range.
The Overland agency at Belleville announces a new Model Four Sedan ready for demonstration described as a pippin and urged to be seen by potential buyers.
Three Deshler men charged with selling intoxicating liquor were tried by County Judge P. S. Harrison. O. A. Richey was fined 100 dollars and costs. Louie Halfmann and William Irvin were dismissed by the court.
Joe Kasparek encouraged a Hubbell youth to buy a shotgun at the Hardware Armory and promised to buy every rabbit shot that day. A Nimrod buyer returned with a sack of about 34 rabbits, and Kasparek paid 7 12 cents each, honoring his wager.
In Topeka Senator Arthur Capper argues the United States should devote more effort to domestic issues rather than policing Europe. He defends Lodge reservations, critiques President Wilson, and urges Senate action on the treaty with a push toward Americanized terms and timely resolution.
John E. Gleason born July 23, 1875 near Munden Kansas died November 30 1919 aged 44 years 4 months and 7 days He worked for Union Pacific elevator and then as Rock Island track walker He leaves wife Nora Graham son George and extended family Funeral set for December 4 at 2 pm at the M E church Ida cemetery will receive burial Also noted is the death of infant Francis Fisher born June 11 1916 who died December 3 1919 at age 2 1 2 Funeral December 4 at 11 am at the home
Joseph Dewey died at his home in Chester at age 64 years 1 month and 20 days. He leaves a family and many friends. Funeral services were held November 29 at the M E church in Chester and the body was interred there.
Karel Shimmek died November 27 1919 at age 56. He was a farmer living near Cuba Kansas and left a wife and family to mourn his death along with relatives and friends.
After a lingering illness Pete Miller died November 21 1919 at his sister Mrs Wm Gunter home from sclerosis of the liver. A Scandia resident for thirty years he previously ran a livery and feed business. He was born December 7 1865 in Newburn Iowa and was aged 53 years 11 months 14 days. Survived by his mother four brothers and four sisters. Funeral at Presbyterian church conducted by Rev J Boyce with pallbearers Wm Mapes Henry Fulcomer Ernest Riggins Andrew Wilson Chas Othberg and W C Davis. Burial in Courtland cemetery.
Alexander E Morehead born November 4 1844 in Ohio died November 15 1919 in Superior Nebraska of stomach cancer aged 75. He lived in Nemaha county and near Republic before settling on the Morehead homestead farm four miles northeast of Republic. He married Phebe Delay in September 1875 and spent forty eight years with the Cross family near Guide Rock. He leaves nine siblings listed in various states and Kansas. He died in Superior after expressing faith in heaven to his brothers and sisters.
The Board of County Commissioners purchased the Republic County Agricultural Association’s fair grounds for 6000. The 30 acre site near the city will host a free gate county fair with buildings valued at 5000 and county machinery stored there under Whitney supervision. A county board of directors and township committees will guide future policy.
John E Gleason of Belleville was instantly killed Sunday at about 9 30 AM near Rydal when struck by Rock Island train No 7 while walking the tracks as a railroad track walker. He had recently left grain company work for the railroad and is survived by a wife and small child. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 PM from the Methodist church with interment in Ida cemetery.
Heavy frequent rains since fall keep fields unthreshed. A motor party near Rackley counted 100 stacks on two neighboring farms, a condition echoed throughout the region as showers persist.
Mae Pilcher and Mae Hallberg observed sparks from a burning trash pile near the photograph gallery. They fetched buckets and water, extinguished the blaze alone without calling the fire department, and prevented a serious fire.

The Cross family mourns the loss of a longtime friend and relative. The remains were laid to rest in Washington cemetery near the grave of his father, as many friends gather to remember his life.
