Miss Edith Short Miss Gladys Short and Miss Verlene Jay of Reynolds visited the Coonrad home last Thursday. Many neighbors hosted dinners suppers and visits in Reynolds Fairbury and with the Thallers. A surprise party at Frank Broady’s and a niece Miss Ethel Van Waning’s party with 25 guests closed the week.

Mysterious shooting injures Ruth Shaver near Creamery

A 16 year old Ruth Shaver was struck in the right cheek by a .38 caliber bullet fired from ambush near the Belleville Creamery. Three shots were fired, bloodhounds failed to track a scent, and Sheriff deputies pursue several leads with possible arrests.

Letter from Garnett J Schoche at Great Lakes Detention Barracks

Garnett J Schoche writes from Great Lakes Illinois August 24 1918 about arriving at camp and receiving clothes. He describes his white uniform feeling well and a vaccination shot in both arms. He notes meals are plentiful his pay delay of three months and requests a pipe tobacco and a mirror while promising to write regularly.

Proclamation Lifts Public Closures With Fumigation Rule

The city rescinds the order closing schools churches and public gatherings effective August 22 1918 under condition all congregating buildings are thoroughly fumigated and books from families with scarlet fever cases are returned and destroyed. The Board of Health reported four houses under quarantine and six deaths at most since July.

Settlement Deadline Noted for Debtors

A terse notice asks all debtors to come in and settle dues by September 15th. It emphasizes self indebtedness and urges timely payment to clear obligations.

Auto Collision Fatal at Fairgrounds Race

Lawrence Levendofsky was killed and Chester Ball Ted Heigle and Orval Barleen injured when Rex Kent lost control of his car during a professional racing event at the fairgrounds. Kent escaped with minor bruises as the car crashed into the embankment and into the crowd. Levendofsky died moments after the impact. Ball Heigle and Barleen sustained serious injuries. Funeral services for Levendofsky were held in Freedom township.

Under the new registration law effective last Saturday twenty six Republic County men registered for service. This is the number who have become of age since the last registration June 5th.
