The state highway commission approved federal aid for a new Salina to Bennington road in Ottawa county after the old route was abandoned when farmers nearby refused to sign for hard surface. The Meridian road association shifted the path to a different Salina Bennington segment, noting the new route is slightly longer but has been as popular as the abandoned one.
Wheat harvests in the Narka territory average 20 bushels per acre at 2.09 dollars per bushel. John Schintow’s Courtland field yields 24 bushels with a 2.00 dollar price. Levi Nobles near Republic averages 27 bushels on 16 acres. oats yield 54 bushels per acre on 12 acres. Frank Carlson near Rackley reports 22 bushels per acre. down wheat yields 14 bushels. Haskins’ adjoining field offers 24 bushels.
Washington reports a total surplus food value of 121 million held by the War Department. Bacon accounts for 23.6 million, corned beef 24 million, roast beef 20.5 million, and frozen meats and poultry 20 million. Surplus coverage eight months for 5 million men. disposal slow until last May.

District 129 notes show numerous Sunday visits among residents. Mrs. Peterson and family of Had something spent time with Henry Peterson and daughter. Several couples and young people visited relatives near Blue Springs and Morrowville, including the Hackbarth and Vinsonhaler families, and Katie Hackbarth's circle of friends.
King Ball of Hemingford and Mrs E H King of Springfield were married July 29 by H H Van Natta. Clarence Suiter of DeWitt and Laura Cain of South Bend were married July 28 by Probate Judge H H Van Natta.
Tony and Charley Novak helped El Novak stack oats last Wednesday. Cerny family members plus John and Wes driven Buicks. several visits across the week include Miss Mollie Cerny staying with Joe Cerny relatives. Pauline Shara had tonsils removed in Fairbury and Frank Cerny’s family joined others on Sunday and Monday visits.
District 51 residents reported camp meeting attendance with Rev. Binder Dillion Craven and Earl Silsby from Burr Oak. Bernie Johnston and Levi Miller of Belleville spent Saturday together while Forrest Hackett visited locals Sunday. Elizabeth McCracken and Della McCracken joined May Bergstrom and Homer Hicks families, with Harve Peebles and Hoffman also noted at Mill Creek camp meeting.
A string of visits and social calls across families in the community. Residents including Sherman Flagle Eurie Flagle and others spent time with relatives and helped cook for threshers. Regular calls occurred at Coonrod Martin and Thaller homes with dinner visits and weekend gatherings.
A large fire on Belleville's south square destroyed four businesses including Eagle Grocery and Concordian Creamery building. Fire crews from Belleville and Concordia fought flames. total loss about 50 000 with most insured. Over 2000 residents watched as the blaze raged well into night.
Clarence Griffeth operates Homer Bushey Alfalfa Ridge Farm in Lincoln township using mixed farming. Despite partial crop failures and a cash rent of five dollars per acre, silage and alfalfa feeding plus dairy stock operations yielded solid returns. Nine cows formed the dairy and he earned cream receipts of 346 dollars in March and April.
August Kaufman tied a mule to a rope and the knot wrapped the rope around a flywheel as a gasoline engine started. The mule pulled the rope, struck Gus Kaufman, bruised him, and caused a cut needing stitches. Doctors Hoover and Shearburn treated him. no serious injury.
