Allied forces advance along a 35 mile front from the Ancre to the Oise, forcing a widening breach in the German stop gap line. By nightfall nearly 40000 prisoners are counted with over 700 guns seized and two enemy airfields captured.
The town board opened a ladies rest room in the hospital basement. It is neatly furnished with willow furniture, an improvement Nappanee needed. Furniture from N. A. Lehman and electric fixtures from Lape Electric Company were used.
A shipment of knitted items and seven articles will be completed by month end. Donations of 10 from the Auction Bridge club, 7 from Mel Stuckman, and 4 from Ray Farrington are acknowledged. Those who did not renew Red Cross subscriptions at Christmas are urged to do so at once. Send your subscription to Miss Bessie Brown, treasurer.
The Nappanee Liberty guards will hold a parade drill and inspection this evening at the drill grounds. Prizes will be awarded to the nearest appearing guard and for athletic events including a 50 yard dash pole vault broad jump high jump 3 legged dash and wrestling match. The public is invited.
J H Matchett of Bourbon offers four desirable eighty acre farms for sale with good terms. The properties are described as in the right place and of the right kind.

Miss Estella Keck fell down stairs this afternoon and broke one arm. No other injuries reported and she receives medical attention.
The notice states that starting September 1 the Advance subscription will cost $2 yearly if paid in advance. Subscribers who prepaid before September retain the current rate of $1.50 per year. The price increase reflects higher postage and paper costs and other production expenses.
The Indiana and Michigan Mennonite Sunday School conference gathers at Clinton Frame Church near Goshen August 18 15 1918 with Rev E S Mullett of Nappanee as secretary. Program includes delegate meetings devotions district sessions and speakers on church education missions and social needs. Next Gravelton Church harvest meeting features Rev Kreider Elkhart with story hour music and delegations from neighboring Sunday schools.
Rev C H Ashman of Sunnyside Washington formerly pastor of the first Brethren church will occupy the pulpit next Sunday morning and evening. He has been sent as a delegate to the general conference of the First Brethren church at Winona Lake and was voted a $200 per year salary increase along with a new automobile.

The district Sunday school convention drew a large crowd with attendees from nearby towns and surrounding country. The Church of the Brethren was filled to capacity and will close with an evening session.
The C. N. Club will meet at the home of Mrs. Floyd Grasz on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Club members have finished a dozen night garments for the Red Cross and are working on a second dozen for the past month.
Mr and Mrs Peter Malcolm await word about their son Donal who was seriously wounded in France on July 15. Friends hope that silence means no further bad news.

A straw stack fire near Frank McDonald’s 7 mile southeast Nappa residence spread to his barn and house, destroying cow calf and most belongings despite insurance of about 2000. The blaze also engulfed Rev. E B Millers barn nearby with 900 dollars insured valued machinery lost. residence saved by water supply as heat prevented pumping. Threshers left earlier and did not see the fire until neighbors called.
Elkhart County seeks 20 young women aged 19 to 35 to join the United States Student Nurse Reserve as part of Indiana's quota for Europe. Mrs. Elizabeth Zook named deputy enrolling agent for Locke and Union townships, with Mrs. J. A. Mitchell coordinating county enrollments. Students receive board lodging and laundry during the nursing course.
James Casper left for Homestead Montana to visit his son Guy who has lived there twenty five years. His father in law A B Miller aged 88 will visit his children in Cando North Dakota. Gust Gang of Bristol travels to Bismarck North Dakota to visit relatives. Isaac Rodegeb forms a partnership with Casper to run the West Market and Clark street wood shop during the absence.
Miss Melinda Yoder from Nappanee has enlisted as a Red Cross nurse. She has been sent to a North Carolina city for further training, becoming the first young woman from Nappanee to enlist as a nurse.

Mrs. Jesse T. Stuckman sustained a severe scalp injury and facial bruises when a gravel road collision two miles east of town occurred Friday at 9 45. She was a guest of Mr and Mrs Noble Truex en route to New Paris for a church convention. The car hit a ditch. windshield fender and radiator were damaged but others were unhurt. Stuckman received treatment at Price hospital and is not confined. Out of town pupils have been told schedules will resume after her August 26 vacation.
Empey’s "Over the Top" film serial continues in the Advance as Sergt Arthur Guy Empey's true life trench tale screens at the Crystal theatre on August 22 to 24. The feature follows the popular book and Empey's wartime exploits with motion photography bringing the story to life for readers and audiences.
Howard Prickett of the 21st Balloon company returns to Newport News Virginia for a brief leave to visit his parents Mr and Mrs T J Prickett and other relatives and friends between assignments at the U S balloon school.
Auto tire workman T. C. Leslie, proprietor of the tire hospital, has installed an electric steam tube plate for vulcanizing automobile tires. Leslie also handles new and second hand tires.
Bernice Speicher six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs H A Speicher living six miles southeast of Nappanee died Tuesday night from burns sustained when her dress caught fire while building a fire in a stove with an older sister. The incident occurred Monday and the flames could not be extinguished in time.
A new timetable took effect Sunday on the B&O railroad with only a few changes. Napanee details are minor and readers can confirm by consulting the time card on page 5.
The furlough of Ralph A. Farrington, home on leave from Fort Dupont Delaware, has been extended until Sunday.
The United States Civil Service commission announces a rural carrier examination to be held in Nappanee on Saturday August 24. The notice lists Cromwell Nobile county as the inspection area and specifies test locations and eligibility requirements.

The First National Bank of Napanee adopts a Durroughs adding subtracting bookkeeping machine to automate posting, balancing, and statements. It speeds up ledgers, prints dates and balances, and flags overdrafts with an OD symbol in red. The same model is used at Farmers' & Traders Bank.
Washington will occupy the pulpit next Sunday and attend the Brethren church general conference at Winona Lake. He plans a week in August 1825 visiting former parishioners and friends in Nappanee.

Last Sunday the South Union Sunday school gathered in the Sam Defrees grove near the church for a harvest meeting and children’s day program. Rev. Evert Pippen preached the harvest sermon in the forenoon. Vernon E. Miller, Superintendent, led a noon dinner and an afternoon program.
The Culp Battery and Vulcanizing company installs vulcanizing and battery machinery at the Stockman garage. Mr. Culp has recently visited several cities to perfect his work in this line.
Rev Mr Beyers of Cedar Rapids Iowa will preach Sundays August 18 and 25 as a possible pastorate candidate. He will stay in Napa next week to meet congregation members and town residents during the visit.
The first Fordson tractor arrived Monday afternoon at the Nappanee Ford station and drew many lookers. A demonstration is planned for Thursday afternoon at George Campbell's farm south of town by the Smith Motor company, highlighting its simplicity and power for farm use.
On Sunday evening August 18 Miss Ida Fields will recite A Prince of the House of David at Union Center Church of the Brethren starting 7 30 p m. The recital, already praised by listeners, unfolds in several scenes. Fields studied under Miss Siatsman of Manchester College for two years and invites all to attend, come early to catch the opening scene.
Repairs costing near $1,000 are underway on the Evangelical church including roof and furnace work. The congregation planned a new church for some time, but the project is postponed until after the war.
The third annual Stuckman family reunion will be held at Rev. P. W. Stuckman’s residence near Nappanee on Thursday August 15. Cal Stueckman of Nappanee is president of the society and Grace Wise Weissert of Plymouth is secretary.

Mullett Bros grocers set new prices on California peaches shown in case and dozen quantities. The move targets both bulk buyers and individual customers with fixed price points.
The Church of the Brethren on Hast Market Street in Nappanee remodeled its 1880 building at a cost just over 6000 dollars. The work, by E Berner and Co of South Bend, was completed and the church dedicated debt free on the first Sunday in June. The redesigned interior seats 700, with a new front vestibule, a two story addition, enhanced lighting, and a concrete basement with a Round Oak furnace.
Rev and Mrs A Taylor and several M B C church members attend the annual camp meeting at Fetter's grove northeast of Wakarusa. Sunday services draw an unusually large attendance.
A civil service examination for a clerk carrier at the Nappanee post office will be held on Saturday August 31. Information may be obtained at the post office.
