Nakusp in British Columbia sits beside the lake at the gateway to the Slocan mines and New Denver. The town boasts scenic beauty and sketching facilities for tourists and artists. The Red Demon torched forests from New Denver to Three Forks in July. It swept north fork Carpenter Creek burning cabins, forcing residents to flee toward Kaslo. Fires spread to Bear Lake and Watson destroying stores and camps. Losses exceed 102000 with no insurance as towns aided survivors.
The steamer W W Hunter on Slocan lake near New Denver caught fire in its galley last week. A strong breeze fanned the blaze as engineer McInnes fought flames with the pump while soaked in smoke. Rushed efforts by PeterTienelle and others with buckets and a hose soon quenched the fire and saved all aboard.
Passengers faced a trying and dangerous ordeal as the steamer's crew handled the situation with commendable poise. Some travelers panicked and begged to be ashore, but most stayed calm and aided in saving the only steamer on Slocan Lake.
Local notes report Lytton shipped dynamite to Trail on Friday. Miner Clarence Donahue died in a cave in at the Surprise mine, burial at Bear Lake noted. Jim Wardner travels Nevada seeking a 50 stamp mine fortune, reporting health Improvement after Africa. Rev Al Gable praises Kootenay locals after Friday schoolhouse service.
