The two county fair opens amid large crowds with extensive exhibits and rides. Carpenters install a new grand stand and seating additions while bands and aerial acts headline entertainment. Schools and health department showings join livestock exhibits as crowds enjoy music and carnival attractions.
North Fork pioneer Laaval Wagner Baker died Monday night at the farm home near the Jeeportance after thirty years of hard pioneer work. He was born in Johnson County Tennessee and moved to Oregon founding Myrtle Fant, later settling at Tee where he resided until his death. He was married twice, first to Susan McQueen with six children, then to Mary Cable with relatives including two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at Foxbridge with Rev. Reuben Sumerson officiating, burial in Foxbridge cemetery, and many friends in attendance.
Exhibits will be bigger and better than heretofore and the industrial exhibit hall will be filled. There will be dances each evening in Oaks pavilion.
George Lee arrives from Crescent City with a shipment and opens a men’s wear and ladies ready to wear store in the Seaman building two doors east of The Herald office. Ise plans a Myrtle Point sale with low prices for friends. J Montgomery from Crescent City teams with Mrs Lee for the opening. Sale starts Thursday and runs until further notice. Lee notes Myrtle Point is a more substantial town and he is back in Myrtle Point.
Hunters in the district find Cement Game Refuge of 2640 acres closed as posted against hunting. County officials debate a proposed bonds issue of 4 million for road improvements with a 40 day preelection requirement. The next county board meeting approaches ahead of the election date.
Mr Tomlinson, a rancher from North Bend, sustained a cut eye after a tent pole struck him on the Soga road. He sought medical help as eye pain and vision trouble persisted and an examination revealed a two inch long cut on the eyeball. He travels frequently to seek treatment and wears a darkened face shield during healing.
Myrtle Point will gain three mails in and three mails out daily starting October 1, under a contract awarded to Southern Pacific Motor Transport Co. Mail from Roseburg should arrive around noon, with inbound from Marshfield around none. The service improves current gaps and provides first class mail both ways.
The Womens Cub normally meeting on the fourth Monday is postponed to the next Tuesday in October for an evening gathering. The event aims to connect business and professional women of the city and introduce new members and crew ladies in the community. Further details will be published soon.
At the regular meeting of the county league it was noted that the Woemar cub and the ShoTA have a child welfare test in the engagement. They will retain their executive committee and report to both organizations. This will bring practical aid to women of Myrtle Point and focus on child welfare work for greater results.
New pastor Rev E V Ostrander and wife arrived from Gold Beach to lead services at the Myrtle Point Presbyterian Church. Morning sermon titled Faith and evening Love drew full congregations in the newly remodeled hall. The couple praised Christian Endeavor youth work and outlined plans to strengthen the church through young people. Remodeling doubled seating, added classrooms, dining room and kitchen. The Ostranders are warmly welcomed and bring strong social grace and youth focus to the town.
Myrtle Point and Grants Pass renew old rivalry on local field next Saturday in the season opener. The two teams, meeting three years after a previous loss, feature hopefuls and new players as Coach LaveBry leads the squad in a promising start.
Clapper and his mother Mrs Almira Clapper of Roseburg were injured when their Ford touring car overturned 150 feet down an embankment on the Roseburg highway while avoiding a circus truck. Mrs Clapper, 79, suffered a broken arm. Mr Clapper had minor injuries. ambulance and wrecker aided, car moved to Myrtle Point Simmons home in Coquille.
Mr and Mrs T M Stover hosted a Friday evening party for young ladies at a dinner described as fashionable and well prepared by an aluminum demonstrator. Mrs E M Hoffman assisted serving. guests included Vue lana Warner Emma Schnewer Kathryn Dunham Ardyre Clinton Ruth Bartun Mate Johnson Ernest Knight and Ann Johnson.
October 26 and 27 set for the Coquille Corn Show with committees chosen and preparations underway promising a good event this year.
A boxing card in Myrtle Point Friday night features five bouts with a total 28 rounds. Main fights include Burnell of Portland vs Dundee of San Francisco at 186 vs 152 pounds, Morris of Perth Amboy vs Williams of North Bend at 196 vs 138 pounds, with other bouts including White of Los Angeles vs Olwen of Marshfield and Myrtle Point locals Barger against an opponent. Tickets at Brainpool ball. The event ends with a dance at Oaks pavilion after the bouts.
Mac Arrid was downtown Tuesday for the first time in a month.
Ed Cromley of Myrtle Point survived a crash on a Marysville highway that killed two men in the other car. He, suffering a hip fracture and broken ribs, was treated in Marysville and later Myrtle Point before resuming plans to travel to San Bernardino for a promised job.
Coos County Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting in Myrtle Point with full attendance and a banquet. Members discussed county fair preparations, expect a large attendance Friday, and approved highway advertisement using six inch oil paintings across two large frames showing Roosevelt Highway views from Bandon beach to Reedsport.
The council authorized sidewalks on several streets with B A Reed to install about half a mile of walkways. A police matron for the fair grounds was proposed, and dog control rules require owners to keep dogs under restraint at all times even if unlicensed. A pool hall license transfer was approved and city officials outlined delinquent tax proceedings. Mayor Baynes presided with the usual council members and officers.
Former Coos County residents gather at Brookside Park Pasadena California on Sunday September 30 for a semi annual reunion. Mrs Fannie Dixon longtime president leads the event expected to draw many local and visiting alumni and rekindle old friendships.
Soee Circus drew a fair crowd in Myrtle Point last night with witnesses praising the show as well attended by three observers.
