The aging battleship Oregon faces scrapping as restoration would cost 20 to 25 million dollars for Oregon to reclaim. Once part of the fleet at Santiago Harbor, the ship now lies rusting near Guam after a history spanning 1898 through wartime selloffs.
U S Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T Benson will deliver a major address at 3 p m on September 10 at the Oregon State fair grounds. This marks his only Oregon appearance on his current west coast trip.
The piece attacks Wayne Morse for politicking across party lines and questions his loyalty. It compares him to Benedict Arnold and accuses him of deal making, urging the Democratic party to distance itself when he pursues influence. Continued on Page Two.
Oregon Senator Guy Cordon urged plain talk during a Prineville visit. In a high school speech he bragged of his record on projects from McNary Dam to the Dalles and urged critics to present concrete plans. He warned of communism’s danger and urged students to seek knowledge about government.
McNary Dam dedication on September 23 will be a historic event with tours of the main-control unit and a viewing room on the Oregon shore. President Eisenhower will give the dedication address and visitors can watch fish in the Oregon fish ladder while enjoying land and water entertainment in the afternoon.
County supervisor William E. Walsh of the Farmers Home administration announces operating loan funds appropriated by Congress to assist eligible family type farm operators who cannot obtain credit from local banks or credit sources. Loans cover livestock equipment seed feed and fertilizer with a five percent interest rate and five year repayment period. Office is in Room 9 Post Office Building Eugene Oregon with hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club hosts a week of upset results in the Fall Golf Tournament with notable matches. Chet Noyes defeats George Linn four down with three to play while Don Adasen beats Bill Downing two down with one to go. The club plans a Friday dinner dance at 7:30 p.m. with trophies, dancing until 1 a.m. Judge Jess Barton toasts, tickets $1.50.
Myrtle Point Inter-church Fellowship meets Monday at 7:00 pm in the Church of the Brethren social room for a dinner, business session, and program. Four of six attendees from the National Youth Conference in Anderson, Indiana, will present. Plans for Dr Vincent Bennett of Pasadena speaking October 24 to November 5 are noted.
The Arago Garden Club announces its first flower show to be held Sunday from 1 to 5 pm at the Arago school gymnasium. Exhibits accepted Saturday 2 to 4 pm and Sunday 10 am to 12 noon. A silver tea will be served 2 to 4 pm. Six sections cover arrangements plants and horticultural specimens.
Parents and friends are invited to attend the Promotion Day exercises at the First Pres Sunday school Sunday morning at 9 45 oclock. Every class will take part and special awards for the years work will be given. Practice is set for Saturday morning at 9 60 for third graders up and 10 for beginners and younger.
Mr and Mrs Fred A Hyde of Powers were hospitalized in North Bend after their car struck a parked road construction vehicle then another machine on Highway 101 near Reedsport Monday evening. Investigating officers called it a miracle they survived. The Hydes’ new car was completely wrecked and Mr Hyde was feared critically injured.
A telephone note from Harold Clarno secretary of the Coos County Fair board says a meeting of the fair board will be held at the Coquille Hotel Tuesday next week September 14 with dinner at 7 45. All board members urged to attend.
Dr E K Engstrom announces a new dental clinic on Seventh Street between Spruce and Ash will open for business next Monday Sept 13. The building is open this week for public inspection with Mrs Hilda Cosgrove listed as dental assistant.
Officials from Pacific Power and Light Co will host directors and investment bankers on a two day inspection tour of the Coos Bay division. They will arrive at North Bend airport Friday evening for a Tioga hotel dinner and Saturday breakfast with local staff before continuing to Tillamook on a United Air Lines chartered plane.
The Hiland theatre starts its fall Sunday matinee series this Sunday at 2pm starring Bob Hope and Joan Fontaine in Casanova’s Big Night, a Paramount color Technicolor production.
George Burr, Coos County Chamber of Commerce road committee chairman, announces a five county road meeting at the Umpqua hotel Roseburg on Wednesday September 29 at noon. Delegates from Coos Douglas Jackson Josephine and Klamath counties will attend to discuss highway improvement programs. Dinner reservations may be arranged with Burr and a note on related dedications in Bandon and North Bend is included. Eugene Marsh speaker of the state senate will address both dedications.
Law defines school bus as a vehicle with eight or more seats used to transport students and displays School Bus signage. Drivers must stop on meeting a stopped bus on a two lane public highway until all children have safely left or crossed the road.
The Coos-Curry Pioneer and Historical association will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Coquille Hotel on Saturday September 11 starting with a 12 noon no-host luncheon. The group will discuss hiring a part time woman to run the museum and open the museum Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays 1 to 3 pm aided by Mrs. Ralph Stephens and Mrs. Mary Randleman. The museum sits in Coquille on the Coquille Community building grounds and the event is open to all interested.
American Legion Posts No. 36 and No. 9 Myrtle Point will hold their annual joint picnic next Sunday at the Nor way grove. All Legionnaires and their families are welcome and urged to be present. Picnic dinner at noon.
Myrtle Point Union High will offer an evening ceramics class for adults this fall. Kiln facilities will be available for local curing of work. Miss Jean Sutherland of the Extension division will teach and credit options through Art 219 may be arranged. Classes meet Monday evenings with start date to be announced.
Rev Norbert G Heins pastor of the local Lutheran church will be the featured speaker at the Oregon District Convention of the Walther League in Forest Grove Oregon. He will address delegates at the banquet Saturday evening and deliver the sermon at the festival service Sunday morning. The convention theme is Witness Where You Are. About 300 will attend the banquet.
