Ramblings by Lang responds that current law does not ban any main calibers for deer except 22s. Larger calibers are permitted for deer hunting and the piece notes a push to plant cotton tail rabbits in the state.
In Just Knockin Around, Cal Gant turns 90 and, with his wife aged 86, renovates a roof and rewires their home on Reedsford Road near Myrtle Point. They celebrate 60 years of marriage in 1950 and have a large family with several children and grandchildren. The Gants are active, self sufficient neighbors with a long Oregon residence.
In perfect weather the North Bayside Grange clinched first place in the county community booth exhibit for the second straight year. Vencesar Hag Grand Chame Henry Van Calear of Sumner led a heavy Jersey Four victory as several youths were among the notable winners.
Oleg and Lidia Nefedov, both 44, arrived in Myrtle Point after a 16 day voyage from Bremen to join Dr. and Mrs. O. M. Clarke. Refugees from Communist Russia they praise American aid and begin learning the language, bound for a new life in the United States.
According to Ed Roberts a general Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club meeting will be held at City Hall next Monday at 7:00 PM to elect officers and directors under the new incorporated setup.
Four hundred seventy five students enrolled Tuesday at Myrtle Point elementary and junior high schools. The count, submitted by Paul Franzensupt, is 11 more than the first day of 1946, with expectant growth through the week. First grade enrollments total 77 as Norway school hosts grades one and two.
Myrtle Point High School opens with 238 students on the first day, an 8 percent rise from last year. Superintendent G. B. Goddard says additional students may enroll by week’s end.
Mr and Mrs John Meveren hosted a Monday dinner for two distinguished guests Senator William Walsh of Coes county and Senator Austin Filegel of Postland along with their wives. The evening featured lively GOP and DEM chatter as the group, plus other attendees, enjoyed the fair atmosphere and conversations that crowded out conversations of the others.
Mrs Howard Whitaker receives the Orchids to You honor from the Myrtle Point BPW club for September. Frances McFaddin Whitaker is active in civic and fraternal groups since moving to Myrtle Point in 1935 from Jamestown New York. She holds a bachelor of science from the University of Washington and taught in Idaho before marriage.
Norwood Browne, treasurer of the Coos County fair board, praised the public for cordial cooperation during fair week and thanked Security Bank for handling daily receipts after hours.
Eight Grange units from Cees county entered the talent show at the fair on Saturday. North Bayside won with a folk dance display praised by judges and applauded by the crowd. Roy Jackson and the Northwesterners from Portland’s KEX performed and presided at the mike.
Boy Scouts and families are invited to a Sunday picnic at Bandon with baseball games and a beach party hosted by the local Scoutmaster John Meer en. Transportation is available from the Heeren home at noon with lunch provided. attendees should bring paper plates and utensils. Mr Heeren hopes at least 80 Myrtle Point residents attend and notes the Scout booth at the fair earned 300 to 400 dollars.
Two men were injured on Friday evening while fighting a blaze on upper Catching Creek when the tank truck they occupied toppled over a bank. Fire officials and rescuers responded to the accident scene. The injuries were described as non fatal.
Eddie Akridg wins the world all around cowboy prize for 1949 at the county fair. He has worked as a professional cowboy for three years and is noted for top finishes in major competitions. The record notes Christianson Brothers as bringers of many top cowboys and mentions page continuation.
The 1980 show featured young exhibitors including Alice May MBier of Grey dren 12 years and under and Louise Jenkins daughter of county agent George Jenkins placing second. Dick Wilson of Sumner took third. Beef showmanship winners were Bobby Stevens Coquille Alice Magill Bridge and Tom Trillard Greenacres. Veterinarian Bennett of Coos Bay attended to stock throughout the event.
Kiddies of Cees county won cash prizes in Saturdays all county parade. Their division marked the only time the event paused for a brief break at the Mastheapital area as part of the celebration.
The editorial page explains the scramble rules. Saturday winners include Dean Van Leuven Darty Van Leuven Sosby Foland I Van Calear John Leeper Jim Sha ee Robert Ronald Halter and Leroy Coener. Monday winners are Ronald Neilson Jackie Brown Robbie Collyer Ray Miller Clark Griffith Billy Howard and Jay Olsen.
