A hunting accident in the northern region left a man wounded in the leg after a misfire by a companion. The judge suspended jail time and reduced a fine by $200, praising restraint and urging safer hunting practices over trophy pursuit.
The Myrtle Point Boy Scouts lost their new cabin to a fire and community efforts rally to fund and locate a one acre site near Myrtle Point with road and water access for a quick rebuild. The town’s Lions Club reports local leaders judging the Armistice Day game as a prime contest with Coquille. the Red Devils visit Friday.
A newly finished Boy Scouts cabin burned to the ground in a recent blaze whose cause is not yet known. Local Scouts Weed Linn Cass and MU visited the site, which was donated to the group and left unusable as they plan a future move to a more accessible location.
Richard George Cleaver Jr former Southern Pacific station agent in Myrtle Point appeared before Justice Thomas B Swanton waived preliminary hearing and was jailed in Coquille on $5000 bond. He admitted a 3242 shortage per Railway Express Agency special agent H E Brown and said he hitchhiked home from Phoenix to confess once in circuit court.
The Organization for Community Chest in Myrtle Point completes plans for a drive to raise 35000 starting November 18. Zone and block chairmen will be appointed to cover small areas and meet a $5000 quota, with $3383090 allocated for the project and several agencies receiving specified funds. A kickoff rally is planned and a meeting on Friday at city hall will finalize drive plans.
Myrtle Point Quarterback Club will hold weekly meetings on Tuesday mornings at 7 15 instead of Mondays. Twelve men attended the last session and organizers hope the change will increase participation. Coaches Beckham and Bunnell lead the discussions on the Bobcats championship prospects.
The Young People's Chorus conducted by Mrs Alice Lafferty will assist at a Presbyterian church worship service this Sunday at 11 o'clock. The chorus, with Mrs Lafferty at the piano, includes members from the church and other community churches. They will lead hymns What a Friend We Have In Jesus Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus with soloists Linda Larson Saved By Grace and Shirley Tobey Love Divine. Dr A Theodore Smith will deliver a brief message for young people. Afterward the chorus will sing Make Me a Blessing. All ages are invited.
The Martha Circle of the First Methodist church will hold a ham dinner in the church basement social hall this Friday October 28 from 5 30 to 7 30 pm. Mrs Dean Bramon is circle president and Mesdames C E Weed and Harold Stemmler lead the dinner.
A small crowd enjoyed a Tuesday evening HH. S. Band and Glee Club concert conducted by Arnold Melby. The program featured skilled trumpets trombones horns basses percussion and soloists with Gay Davenport as accompanist and a full Glee Club roster led by seasoned performers from Arlene Evans to Betty Lou Meyer.
Mr and Mrs Tom Billings from Marial Ore visited Myrtle Point en route to Bandon to see Mrs Frye confined in hospital there They also planned to visit a brother in Powers before returning home The Herald received a playful rebuke from Tom about a fishing trip invitation saying the fishing is good and he may surprise them one day.
A baby smothering incident near a home led local volunteer firemen to use a pulmotor device. Mayor Ritchie Francis and J. M. Myers helped answer the call as a Herald reporter noted the rescue. The infant’s father serves in the U S Army.
Mimnaugh and Guerin urge Coos county employers to install payroll savings for employees to buy U S bonds. Several firms including Menasha Coos Head Food, West Coast Telephone, Cape Arago Lumber, and Irwin Lyc report bond savings programs in effect, signaling economic stability and hundreds of local families starting to save.
The Hallowe'en parade sponsored by the PT A with Mikoe Schroeder as chairman will form at the high school athletic field at 7 pm. Prizes will go to best costumes in each grade. Participants will march north on Fourth, east on Spruce, south on Seventh, west on Maple, then return to the field. Crackerjack boxes for each participant. In case of rain the event moves to the Oaks pavilion on the fair grounds.
Golfers vied in a Scotch one ball event at Coquille Valley Country Club Sunday afternoon. Winners were Avoid McGrew and Hank Burr. runners up Jack Bill and Spike Carl. Prova and Clayton Mast finished third. Next Sunday a grippers tournament will tee off at noon with handicap play and shot replay.
Delegations from Coos Bay and North Bend churches will join the local church for series of meetings led by Rev. Gillett and his wife. An evening program will feature moving pictures of Africa and trophies from the country. They are sponsored by the Oregon Conference of Methodist churches and are on furlough in the United States.
Community calendar item notes a Halloween dance this Saturday night sponsored by the junior women’s active club. The event will be held at a local venue and promises music and refreshments for attendees.
