The Northwest forestry sector brought about 4.6 billion to Washington and Oregon in 1972, with lumber leading at 1.893 billion and pulp and paper at 1.256 billion. Wages topped 1.3 million in the two states and direct forest employment supported over 1.6 million people.

State travel director Victor B. Fryer announced September 1973 totals for six border information centers fell 15.2 percent from 1972. Through May 1 to September 1973 centers served 196 563 visitors, with August the busiest month at 58 278. Foremost concern among tourists was gasoline. declines varied by location with Salem Capitol visitors down 14.7 percent for September and statewide year to date down about 16 percent.
