Carlson and Ritz are World War II and World War I veterans respectively. Carlson says the program highlights why a McKay vote benefits veterans and peace.
Eugene Democrat Larry Watson urges Oregon Democrats to oppose Wayne Morse in the US Senate race. He accuses Morse of breaking Chicago Democratic principles and calls him a reformer who cannot deliver on promises. The speaker says Morse’s rhetoric diverges from party platform. A Save Oregon Salmon pamphlet urges Oregon voters to back Initiative Petition No 7 to close small coastal streams to commercial netting. The measure, backed by major sportsmen groups, aims to preserve Oregon salmon and reduce taxpayer costs by ending netting in these streams.
Troop 99 of the Boy Scouts of America sponsored by Methodist men held its first Court of Honor of the year in the Scout building on Thursday evening Oct 11. John Rhodes chaired with Irving Edwards and Ray Getchell assisting. 18 boys earned three year Cub Scout Service Stars and 14 earned 11 year Scouting Service pins. The investure service welcomed 4 new candidate scouts. First Class Badges were awarded to Ben Brodie Darwin Noyes and Donald Wagner. The Senior Patrol Leader Ben Brodie and his patrol leaders received special commendation. The troop grew under Scoutmaster Arlo Duncan from 9 to 31. Plans to divide into patrols with assistant Scoutmasters were announced to aid advancement.
Chas Porter a Democratic candidate for Congress in the Fourth District visited Myrtle Point last Friday. The World War veteran and Air Force standby reserve captain met local citizens and spoke on his own record while criticizing his opponent’s. Porter is married with four children.
Mrs Lena Brown age 68 died in a two car collision on the McKenzie highway near Springfield Sunday morning about 5 oclock. She was riding with her son William and grandson Billy Brown returning to Myrtle Point.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the Myrtle Crest gym in Myrtle Point on Thursday November 1 from 2 to 6 pm. Appointments can be made via the registration committee, which will also conduct street registrations at Security Bank the post office and Dollar-R-Wise Market.
Georgianna Vaughan, Coos county clerk, reports Democrats ahead of Republicans in voter registration with 14 582 to 9 totals. Democratic share 59.8 percent, Republican 38.6 percent, Independents 1.6 percent.
Bridge Parent-Teacher Organization held its October 9 meeting with president Elmer Bronson approving the annual Bridge grade school carnival to be staged Saturday November 3. A 7:30 pm community talent show will headline with a short skit by Delmar Robison Darren Robison and Stanley Waterman.
A large oil tanker and trailer bound for Roseburg crashed early Sunday near Powers Junction after a car crossed the center line. Driver Bob Martin escaped unharmed. fuel oil spilled across E F Hoffman’s garage area and field. The loss includes the truck and trailer, valued at around 10,000.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce promotes Buy-At-Home tickets in Coos county. Purchasers for a dollar or more at participating merchants receive tickets with a chance to win grand prizes valued at $788.00, including a Kelvinator dryer and other goods.
Elmer Deetz a Canby farmer spoke to the Coos County Republican club at Coquille City Hall detailing his tour for US Senate candidate Doug McKay. He condemned Wayne Morse for alleged untruths about McKay and said scandals cited by Morse and Neuberger backfired. He claimed McKay returned to Oregon to clear his name and urged readers to view the state as waking up to Morse. Continued on Page Ti.
In Coquille Valley the fall golf tourney produced a major upset as Erv Dettman faltered in the championship flight. Floyd Hall overtook him to win by two holes with Hall making a clutch par on the final hole. Al Hall then defeated Bill Downing in another notable upset, as the field narrows heading to page nine.
Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union No 2691 sponsors a non partisan Candidate Fair at Coquille Community Building Saturday at 7 30 p m. The event invites the public to hear county state and national candidates ahead of the November 5 general election. All people of all political faiths are welcome.
A preliminary press dinner is planned at 6 in the Coquille hotel before a general meeting at 7 30. The program will be an impromptu affair with speakers from various newspapers urged to attend.
